Charles Giles of the "Hind".

Hi,

l'm trying to find out about Charles Giles who married Alice Courts in 1808 in Fowey, on their marriage details it states "of the Hind" and l've found him mentioned as a Coastguard on the revenue cutter, they had a son also Charles in 1809, but l cannot find anything else about the family. l wondered if someone has an idea how l can find out more about him and the "Hind" during his service. l did wonder would he have been in the merchant or the royal navy to have been a coastguard, perhaps that would be a way to trace his history.

A look at the standard research guide suggests that there are few formal records for the service at this relatively early date, but data can be found in various files at the National Archives in the series ADM.

l did wonder would he have been in the merchant or the royal navy to have been a coastguard, perhaps that would be a way to trace his history.

A revenue cutter would normally be a Royal Navy vessel, so he would have been serving in the RN at that stage. Paul Benyon's site has some useful information on the Hind.

Ships' musters for the Hind for this period are in ADM 37 at the National Archives. If you can find him there, the entry should give an approximate date and place of birth and may provide a lead to his previous and/or subsequent ship(s).

He may also have been entitled to a Greenwich pension, which offers you an additional research route. It's a long shot, but I wonder if he is the Charles GILES Greenwich out-pensioner who applied for admission to Greenwich Hospital on 2 July 1824? This man was apparently admitted to the Hospital as an in-pensioner in that year, aged 52, so born c1772.

Would that time-frame fit with what you know of your man?

If you are visiting Kew to look at the ship's musters, you could also look at this Charles GILES in the Greenwich Hospital registers for 1824, which are in ADM 73. You might also find him before 1824 in the out-pension paybooks in ADM 22. Any entries found in these Greenwich sources should give you enough information to establish whether he is your man and (if he is) will help with tracing his service in the RN.

Thank you so much for your help, l must try get to Kew at sometime to have a look at the ADM 37's having worked there for many years l know what l'd be looking at, its just getting there that is a problem at the moment, l tried to order photocopies but they estimate completion in November! l've checked out the Charles Giles you mentioned in the Greenwich Hospital and l don't think that is him because he's still there in the 1841 census and it shows him as being from Ireland. l suppose there is a chance that even though he came from Fowey as did his wife and son he may have been transferred elsewhere.
