Hi baymanofkb, and welcome to the forums!
I've slipped your post across from Problems Navigating to the Staffordshire forum.
To help our members get you started, can you please give us some rough dates for your grandfather and great-grandfather?
Have you found either of them in a census?

HELLO Staffordshire members
The info I have is My Grandfather GEORGE WILLIAM BUCKNALL he was Married in1899 to EMMA MAY LUNN in WALSALL and was the Lock keeper in PENKRIDGE at Lock no 86 I believe he may have owed a boatyard there. My father GEORGE THOMAS BUCKNALL was born in MEWES LANE in 1904. My father married CLARA CHEW of SHORT HEATH.

Hello
I'm just looking at a site called "old-maps.co.uk" and am viewing Penkridge (which I typed in the search box). I can't actually see Mewes Lane, but if you look at the census return you have found for GB, then click on the "district" at the top of the return, it will show you the description of the enumeration district. This in turn will show the streets nearby.
I would have done it for you, but I can't find the return to which you are referring!
Best wishes,
JosieLast edited by Kerrywood; 12-05-2011 at 7:40 AM. Reason: post moved from the Introduce Yourself forum

Hello baymanofkb and welcome to the forum
Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate of George & Emma? From the GRO indexes on FreeBMD I see that George is indexed twice, as George BUCKNALL and George BUCKNELL. There is a matching entry for Emma LUNN (Walsall district, Vol. 6b, page 1331, December quarter of 1899).
Let us know if you don't know how to order copies of BMD certificates.

Hello again,
Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 2699; Folio: 96; Page: 52. (Courtesy of TNA)
Above is a reference to George and Emma Bucknall living in Walsall. Interestingly, there is a Penkridge Sreet on the same page, although George and Emma are living in Croft Street, Walsall.
If they are your ancestors, there is no mention of lock-keeper. Just wondering whether this was a part-time job?
Annie Lunn (sister-in-law) aged 18, is in the same household!

It would be worth you getting some credit with Findmypast so you can look at the 1911 census.
George Thomas Bucknall is I think listed as just Thomas Bucknall, aged 7 and born Penkridge. There is an older George Bucknall in the same household (again not a lock-keeper!). You will discover some other family connections too.
What is interesting is that Emma is enumerated in a different place. As the census is just a snapshot of a single night we can't tell whether that was her normal place of residence.

In addition to what Josie found in the 1901 census of Walsall, on the next page living in the same house are Celia L BUCKNELL, aged 13, and Bernard L BUCKNELL, aged 5, both born Walsall, who are shown as siblings of George - might help trace George's parents in previous census records!
1871 census of Walsall (RG10/2961, folio 68, page 8) shows the following family:
5 Pleck Road
George BUCKNELL Head Mar 34 Chainmaker Staffordshire Walsall
Susannah do Wife Mar 35 do do
Jane do Daur 6 do do
George do Son 4 do do
Mary do Daur 1 do do
I think Susannah has now become Hannah BUCKNALL in the 1881 census of Walsall (RG11/2823, folios 72/3 , pages 18/19):
90 Pleck Road
Hannah BUCKNALL Widow 44 Works at Hinge Factory Darlaston
James WILKES Widower 81 Hinge Maker unable to work do
James do Son 29 Engineer do
Martha BUCKNALL Daughter 28? Buckle Tonguer? Walsall
Sarah Jane do do 16 Buckle Coverer do
George do Son 15 do
Mary do Daughter 10 Scholar do
George's occupation has been completely written over and is very difficult to decipher - sorry.
There is a death registration for George BUCKNALL in the June qtr 1875 at Walsall reg district, aged 39, which could well be relevant to you.

George BUCKNALL snr
Further to the above, there is a marriage registration in the June qtr 1860 at Walsall reg district of a George BUCKNALL and one of the other names on the page is that of a Susannah TITLEY. I think Martha BUCKNALL could perhaps be mistranscribed as BAGNAL in the 1871 census of Burntwood, aged 10 born Walsall, and is staying with a Richard & Caroline ATKINS and shown as their niece - at least it is a possibility (birth registration of a Martha BUCKNALL in the September qtr 1861 at Walsall).

My Thanks to all of you for the useful info and directions. I will persevere along these lines. When I return home I will dig out some certificates that I have. As my father GEORGE THOMAS BUCKNALL other known as THOMAS GEORGE was born in 1904 So the death of a George Bucknall in 1875 could not have been his father, does that make sense?
