    See http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governme...ates/DG_175676

Due to the sensitive nature of stillbirth registrations, only the mother or father of the child is able to apply for a certificate. The parent must be named on the birth certificate to do this. Should the parents be deceased, a brother or sister can apply if they can provide their parents’ dates of death.

First though the information given on the website Peter supplied is current policy it is not the law.
Legally anyone in the world may apply for details of any stillbirth.

    Apply to
    The Registrar General
    C/O General Register Office
    PO Box 2
    Southport
    Merseyside
    PR8 2JD

On your application give whatever details of the stillbirth you know and the reason you wish to have the information.
The Registrar General will then decide whether to supply the information or refund the fee.

The relevant Act of Parliament (The Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1953.) states-
"30.-(1) The Registrar General shall cause indexes of all certified copies of entries in registers sent to him under this Act or under any enactment repealed by this Act to be made and kept in the General Register Office.
    (2) Any person shall be entitled to search the said indexes at any time when the General Register Office is open for that purpose, and to have a certified copy of any entry in the said certified copies, on payment to the Registrar General or to such other person on his behalf of the following fees respectively, that is to say-
    (a) for every general search the sum of thirty shillings ;
    (b) for every particular search, the sum of one shilling and sixpence ; and
    (c) for every certified copy, the sum of three shillings and ninepence.
    (3) The foregoing provisions of this section shall not apply to certified copies of entries in registers of still-births, but the Registrar General may, if he sees fit in any particular case and on payment of as aforesaid of the appropriate fee aforesaid, cause a search to be made for, and allow any person to have a certified copy of any entry in any such certified copies or in any filled register of still-births which has been forwarded to him."

Alternatively if you know if and where the stillborn was buried you could get the details from the burial register.
    Cheers

If you know the area you could contact the local cemetery office.
I had a similar problem - the stillbirth being my sister. The lady whom I dealt with was extremely helpful. I knew that my sister was buried in the local cemetery but only the rough date. She found the date and gave me the burial plot number - my sister is buried in a grave with several others, so I would expect that most cemeteries did the same.
Knowing the date (at least month and year) I was able to send for her certificate as I knew my parents dates of birth and death. It turned out that she was buried just two days after her birth.

If it's a standard application, you should follow the advice on the directgov site http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governme...ates/DG_175676

    Hi Jenni

I phoned the GRO this morning and the chap was very helpful and is sending me the relevent forms to fill in.

Unfortunately, I do not have an exact date, just the year. He said they should be able to find the records - fingers crosed. My parents were married in October 1940 and I have the year 1942 for the Still Birth. My other brother was born May 1943.

I only know my parents lived in Valley Drive, Brighton. Not much information to find the cemetery.

If they do find the certificate, the date should help me search for his burial. I believe they did bury them in with others, so they had christian burial.

Would mean so much to me to have the certificate and burial place.

    Kind regards

    Margaret

    Jenni,

Just had to let you know I contacted a Brighton cemetery and, have found my brother's burial place. The lady was extremly kind and helpful. So, now I have a burial plot number and date which, should help GRO find his death certificate.

She said he was buried with others but, given a Christian burial with the same minister. It's a great comfort to me.

One should never give up hope.

    Margaret.
I am so happy for you.

In my own family, my mum and dad had a still-birth in 1943. At the urging of the family doc. I was conceived and after 16 hours in labour, I arrived. Internally, my mum suffered and as a result, could not have any more children. They never talked about the still-birth, but I often wonder about him/her.

Maybe, I'll pursue this apect further.
