    Default Gedcom

Help! I have all my family data on Family Tree Maker 2005. I need to put it onto Gedcom. How do I get started and do I have to re-enter everything onto a Gedcom File? Please help. Zeno

I am (still!) using FTM 5.5, so hopefully this will work for your version too.

    Open your family file
From the File menu (top left), select Copy/Export Family File
In the Save as type box, select GEDCOM (the last option in the dropdown list)
Give the gedcom file a new name and a date, and Save it to a convenient folder.

You can then attach the gedcom to an email to send to someone, or upload to the web, or whatever.

If you have other questions, I hope someone else will answer them, because I can only do the basics.

Hello Zeno, I don't use FTM , my program is Kith and Kin but usually there is a facility to export your work to a seperate new folder as a Gedcom file. It should all be done for you, look under the "file" tab along the top tool bar.

Thanks for the tip Michael. I'm using Family Historian 4 and have been wondering abut alternatives.

My version of FTM is 2005 and is more or less similar to the above.
    File
    Export File
    Entire File
A screen appears entitled 'New Family File'
Enter 'where' you wish to save it to (mine are in a folder in My Documents)
Give it a name in the 'File Name' field
In the 'Save as Type' field choose Gedcom (the last choice in the drop down box)

    Save

    Hi Zeno
Gedcom is the file type and not a program.
Once you have exported and saved your gedcom file as per instructed above, you can 'import' it into your new program as long as the new program uses gedcom files and most do.

Mutley, I could give you a very big hug for that. I had 27 files in all stages of content by yesterday evening but I am sure that thanks to you I've cracked it.
