Hi All,
I wrote a while back but no one was able to help so I'm hoping that if I post my plea again someone might be able to help now.
Many helpful folks from different genealogy groups have helped me gather the following but I'm claiming it all as my own work for the sake of shortening the request...... but thanks go to them all.
In the 1871 Census for Cleator Moor I found my GG-Grandfather James Henry TAYLOR b abt 1845 Ireland with his wife Margaret KELLY b abt 1841 Ireland.
In the 1861 Census they are not married but I find Margaret living with her family in Cleator Moor. I don't find James so I investigated further and find that James was surname SLOAN although Margaret and James' marriage in 1867 James he is SLONE.......still he's not TAYLOR.
Again I search the 1861 census but I still can't find a James SLOAN/SLONE/SLOANE about 16 years of age living in Cleator.
From the marriage certificate I also find that James' father is Patrick SLONE ... deceased.
I've had a look at the 1851 census where I found living in Church Lane James SLOAN the correct age but living as a lodger with other SLOANs possibly family but not his parents.
Patrick /H/52/Lodging house keeper/ Ireland
Jane/w/58/formerly servant/CUL
George/s/16/road labourer/CUL
John/Neph/13/Ag Lab/IREL
James/Lodg/7/ /Ireland
This Patrick might well have been James father if it wasn't for the Cumberland born wife and 16 year old son George.
Cumbrian Society has transcribed and published the 1851 Census ........all except the area that I'm hoping to find family in. Would anyone have FILM REF. (H.O.107) Folios:-2437 Fols 287 - 405 for Cleator Moor and Egremont
Please Help
Lynn

Hi Lynn
I cant help with 1851 census but I live in Cleator Moor so may be able to help in other ways. Unfortunately I am off on holiday tomorrow for a week but if you email me some more details, when I get back I will see what I can do to help.
Your story sounds very similar to mine. I spent 2yrs trying to trace my g grandfather James Thompson b c 1851 Staffordshire, father William Thompson but couldnt find birth cert or marriage. I had the family back to 1871 census then someone kindly found the family in 1861 for me with a different father James Palmer! Still cant track down his BC tho! Unfortunately the family seemed incapable of giving same birthplace twice LOL

Sloans
Joan,
Thanks for the Cleator Moor address. I'd actually posted a leter on the notice board a while back....but still enjoyed looking at the pictures.
I read you message with excitement hoping that at last there'd be a break through......
I have nothing else to add to what I've already listed. Sad tale............for months I've been able to go no where with the SLOANs.
Yours
Lynn

Hi
My father, James Sloan was born in Egremont in 1920,
he left the area in 1935, he was at that time virtually the last of his line, if this message is of any interest please respond. Best regards,
James Patrick Sloan

Sloan
Jimmus1 - Who was your grandfather? I'm also researching Sloans (my family name). They originated in Ireland and the majority came from around Cockermouth area. Some were also in the Haltwhistle area.

Grandads Name
Hi. My Grandfathers name was Andrew, no middle name as far as I know.
He was born around 1898, and died in 1922. I will look to see if anyone in
the family has any more details I can send.
All the best. Jim Sloan

Hello Lynn,
The only one I can find in 1861 is this one but he does not quite tie in. Is living at Cleator Moor but has different wife and is slightly older. He is a Furnace Labourer. Ann is also Irish.

Hi, I am also researching family name Sloane. I know my grandfather (Raymond Henry Sloane) did a lot of research and traced the family back to Rostrevor Ireland. His parents were Henry Bernard Sloane and Emily H Sloane. His grand parents were Francis Henry Sloane, great grandparents were James Sloane and Catherine Henry (the first to travel to NZ). I have found military records of some help. I know that my grandfather discovered that the churches which held birth records were distroyed. Our family is of Catholic religion, but I believe there was a lot of fighting over religion which resulted in fires etc before converting to the catholic religion.

Welcome to the forum.

Sadly, the original poster who started this thread is no longer a member of the forum.
Maybe you would like to start a new thread with any queries you may have regarding the Sloane name.
Good Luck in your research.
