Herbert James Thom b 1865 in Aberdeen joined the Indian Police about 1922, how do I track down his time spent in the Police Force. He may have also spent time in Burma.

If he was senior staff, you may find notice(s) of his appointment(s) in the London Gazette.

Otherwise, you will probably need to have research done in the India Office records at the British Library. Please see this page for details of their holdings on this subject.

He is mentioned in the Supplement to the London gazette 1 January, 1943 Herbert James Thom Esq. M.C. Indian Police; Assistant Inspector-General of Police Criminal Investigation Department, United Provinces. Would that just be notice of promotion, I can only print that one page, page 7 need to find page 6 to see what the Honours were. Their are several entries in the inward shipping notices to the UK for his wife Nan Mary and Family.

Page 6 is here. It's the New Year's Honours List.
It might be worth checking The Times as well (paysite)

There are a couple of mentions of H J Thom on the pay/subscription site findmypast. If you search the 'India Office List 1933' you will find one mention relating to the AGRA AND OUDH POLICE DEPARTMENT and another relating to the INDIAN POLICE SERVICE; this second item having some details of his service.
You will also find a number of outgoing passenger lists for Herbert Thom and his family to India on the same site.
p.s. Should this be 1895?
