Wilfred Thomas Nichols was the father of my friend Jane. He died in July 1992, and Jane thinks that he had earned medal(s) from his time with the R.A.F. She tells me he was a driver for the R.A.F rather than a pilot.
Jane believes her father did not collect his medal(s) because he went through a painful divorce and that his time in the forces only brought back bad memories.
Nearly 20 years after his death, she asked me if there was any way of finding out whether he had actually earned any medals and if so could she apply for them.
Having just done some research on one of my ancestors who served in the Boer War and WW1, i decided to have a look for her. This is where i instantly ran into trouble.
If i am correct, unlike WW1 anything to do with WW2 or service near that time up to the present day is held by the M.O.D. I have had a look on uk veterans and it all seems a little complicated. I am wondering, given the following limited information whether she has any chance of finding her fathers service record and possible medals?
The only details are...
Wilfred Thomas Nichols
born...19-11-1914......Paradise St, Rugby.
died....25 ?-7-1992
Driver for R.A.F possibly in WW2.
Any response whether its good or bad would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

I believe the only way you can find out is to obtain his Service Records which, as next of kin, your friend would be able to apply for. There are no WW2 Medal Rolls available for the Army so I assume it's the same with the RAF.
Take a look at the following page from the Imperial War Museum's website and you can download their guide "Tracing Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force Ancestry" which may be of some help
