This is wonderful. How and where do you find this information - I'm at a total loss on how to go about it

Do you have access to the census kaytw? For example, you can view the 1841 to 1901 Scottish census on Ancestry and the 1841 to 1911 census on ScotlandsPeople. These are both pay sites.

I don't have access to the 1911 Scotland census (which has just been released) but it could be useful for you to check this particular census on ScotlandsPeople to see which of the Hamilton's and Lawson's are still in Scotland at this time.

You would need to buy some credits in order to view the indexes and census images. This site also has many other types of records, such as BMD's, parish registers. However, the marriage information I posted earlier came from the family search site, which is free.

On these attestation papers which he signed in Aug 1918 he states he had 2 years in the (I thin)k Imperial Army(Imp Army )and 4 years in the R. C. R (Royal Canadian Regiment?). So perhaps he first came to Canada with the military.
