    Default St Botolph Bishopsgate

I am finding it difficult to locate where I should begin looking for some Catholic Baptism Records.

I have a family of interest living at 112 Bishopsgate Street in the registration district of East London in 1861
and two children, Elizabeth and Thomas Downs , born 1853 and 1856 approx. resp.

Gandy doesn't seem to list this area of Middlesex.

    Any help much appreciated

Spooky! My ex has distant relatives who were at 112 Bishopsgate 1847-51 running a jeweller's shop. Name James Anthony Higho.

As for Catholic records you might find this useful

Assuming they were in the City when the children were born, St Mary Moorfields would be a good possibility. Transcripts have been published by the Catholic FHS, but I believe they are all pre-1850s. Later registers have been retained by the church.

Other churches to consider for the 1850s, though further afield ...

    St Etheldreda, Ely Place (Holborn)
    Sts Peter & Paul, Clerkenwell
    St Joseph, Bunhill Row

There's a very full list here, but I'm afraid most of these churches will have opened too late for you.

Given the difficulty of finding and accessing Catholic registers, you'd probably be better off going for birth certificates. But I'm assuming you haven't found birth index references for these children, and that's why you're hoping to take this route?

I have found the GRO birth certs for these two - they are found in 1853 Elizabeth ( Stepney) and 1856 or 7 ( can't remember exactly now) for Thomas ( East London) and specifically Bishopsgate on a later Census .

I am trying to prove a link to my Cronin/Downs family in other threads. The godparents might be the key to this hence the search for the Catholic records. Perhaps Stepney is another RC church again. Birth certs alone will only confirm what I know aready, that Thomas Downs was a pastry cook and that wife is Ann Elizabeth nee Fenning

    Apologies for my incorrect assumption.

    Hi

As far as I am aware St Botolph Bishopsgate is a C of E Church, that is where my parents were married in the 1950s. I used to pop in there when I first started work in London, unfortunately it was badly damaged in one the bombings in London in the 80s/90s and had to be re-built, never been in there since it was re-built.

It is indeed. I believe the thread title relates to the civil parish in which this family is found in the census.
