In 1881 Mary is not there and Edward has only Ann C 1857, and Clara J 1860, with him.

I thought Mary had died seeing as she is not with Edward in 1881 but....
she seems to have moved farms and is living with the farm bailiff and daughter Helen Joyce. Farmer's wife and Farmer's daughter in the occupation column is crossed through so maybe they had a falling out.

Is there any sign of another child, Edward? The Bury & Norwich Post of Wednesday 12 Oct 1842 carries this poignant announcement of his death the previous Thursday:
'to the inexpressible grief of his parents, after only a few days' illness, aged 2 years and 8 months, Edw. Ridley, son of Mr. Edward Hilder, farmer, of Cockfield.'

Though his life was so brief, he should appear on the 1841 census.

    Cannot see him yet
His birth was registered in Cosford in March 1840 and his death in Dec 1842
I cannot yet find the registration of the birth for the second Edward born 1843 yet I can see Thomas in 1844, Eliza in 1846 and Ernest in 1847.

I did come across the birth in the indexes earlier and wondered what had happened to him.

    Hilder Edward Ridley

I couldn't see Edward Hilder in the 1841 census (I must re-check) but I did come across a Ridley Hilder staying with a Ridly family. I was wondering if Thomas was Mary Ridley's father. Mary does state she was born in Bury St Edmund.

Edit: That's good Mutley, if you've checked for an Edward then I don't need to re-check.

'Tis my own fault for calling myself a nerd in the first place (but I hope the name isn't going to stick! ) Perhaps I need to invent a new name? If we're to be the classic cartoon threesome I should really be a mouse, I suppose.

I think it is cut and dried that the first Edward 1840 - 1842 died but I am struggling with the 1843 child.

I have found an 1871 census with an Edward Hilder born about 1843 in Cuckfield. He is married to Harriett and they have three children Mary E. 1866, Richard H. 1869 and Edward at 2 months old.
An explanation may be that in the where born column Mary and Richard have...
