hi
on the 1861 census for Joseph Hulse it states occupation as Captain of 'flats' . or i may have read it wrong ...
can anyone help and explain what it is ?
i suspect it is to do with the river .. on the 1851 census he is a waterman .

I would imagine he was the captain of a flat boat, used on the canals/waterways
