Default Thomas Broome and Jane Warrender (Worrinder)

I have GG Grandmother by the name of Emma Broome who came to Australia in 1856 on board the "herald". Emma married convict William Williams in 1858 in Goulburn NSW. Australia. Would love more info on Emma's family, Thomas Broome and Jane Warrender or Worrinder, in particular Thomas. Emma was born in 1832, Weston Under Lizard. I have no birth date for Thomas.
    Thanks
    Sue

Thomas Broome and Jane Worrinder were married at Weston under Lizard, Staffordshire on 23 Feb 1823 (Source: Family Search)

I have moved your thread from the "Problems Navigating Brit-Gen" Forum to the Staffordshire Forum where it will hopefully attract interest from those with knowledge of local resources

In 1841 Emma was living with Thomas and Jane Weston Village, Weston under Lizard (enumerated Broom)

Thomas was an Ag Lab b. abt 1794 and Jane abt. 1800 (both born in County)

There were 12 people in the household. If you don't already have them let me know and I'll post the details

It's possible that by 1851 Jane had died and the family had moved to London where Thomas was remarried and working as a Gardener.

I say possible because 4 of the 5 children bear a remarkable similarity to 4 of the children living with them in 1841 and all the birthplaces are shown as Weston

Living at 9, New Wharf, Whitefriars, London (all named Broome)

    Thomas 57 Gardener b,Weston, Staffs
    Mary 41 b.Farley
    Thomas 22 Shoemaker
    Esther 17
    John 14
    Henry 11
    Mary Ann 8
    All children born Weston

I'm away to bed shortly so I'll post the children in the 1841 census just in case you don't have them:

    Harriet 16
    Jane 15
    Thomas 12
    Esther 10
    Emma 7
    John 5
    Henry 2

Also in the household were John Onions 81, Mary Milward 24 and Sanders Gibbs 1.

Census reference and copyright as #3.

Apart from Esther's age being slightly out between 1841 and 1851 Thomas, John and Henry are strikingly similar in both censuses.

Hopefully someone might be able to find a death for Jane but if not I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find anything

Thanks for moving me to the correct place. I had no idea where to post a new thread (derrr). Thomas & Jane have been hanging around for a while and thought it was a good time to find them a home. Looking forward to sorting them out. Thanks for the help and would appreciate the details that you offered to post.

Most of it (the names of the children) is in my post 5. This is all the family in the 1841 census:

    Thomas 47
    Jane 41
    Harriet 16
    Jane 15
    Thomas 12
    Esther 10
    Emma 7
    John 5
    Henry 2
Also in the household were John Onions 81, Mary Milward 24 and Sanders Gibbs 1.

Please note that i mistyped Thomas' age in the 1851 census. this should read 57 years old which matches the age of the Thomas 10 years earlier in 1841.

I'll go and edit it to avoid confusion.

Did the family all travel to Australia together or was it only Emma?

It's possible that by 1851 Jane had died and the family had moved to London where Thomas was remarried and working as a Gardener.
If the family moved to London together this could be Jane's death:

Broome Jane Dec qtr 1844 London vol 2 page 159

Unfortunately ages at death were not given in the indices until 1866 so there's no sure way of knowing whether it's her short of buying the death certificate. However the family were living at Whitefriars in 1851 which came under the City of London Registration District. You will note that this death was also registered in the City of london.

This is a possible marriage for Thomas and Mary

Broome Thomas Sep qtr 1849 Lambeth vol 4 page 346
Indexed on the same page is a Mary Jackson

I'm not really confident about that but if I've been on the right track that's the only marriage after 1844 that would seem to fit.

I think one of our London experts might be able to find the actual marriage which would be a great help
