Hi Richard,
Thanks for that info but if it was my grandfather I think the family would have known about the DCM as my father and uncles all served in ww2 and would have known the significance of the award.
Thanks again

Unfortunately not - two possible ways to get more information about this man - especially if you have interested family in Essex/Suffolk who could help out - would be through either viewing the actual medal rolls at the National Archives at Kew - they are not online and have to be viewed there - which may give additional details - and/or contacting the Essex Regiment Museum at Chelmsford.

One other thing - how sure are you about the description of the medals you say you played with as a youngster - if they were only his - for WW1 service - I would have expected them to be 1 Star (1914-15) and 2 circular (British War Medal and Victory Medal) - 3 stars and 1 circular certainly has me scratching my head - not that I'm an expert by any degree - just an interested amateur
Cheers
Sue

Hi Sue,Thanks for the lead I Googled the Essex Regiment and via various links got back to the National Archives and purchased a copy of the Medal Roll for $3.12AUD it was worth it I believe that the Thomas J Bloomfield 3096 Essex Regiment and 240473 Labour Corps is my Grandfather,I am saying that based on the entry of his name would suggest if he wrote his own name then it must be him, as my father brother and myself all have the same hand.
With regard to the medals it looks like he was awarded 3 medals The 1914-1915 Star,The Victory Medal, and the British War Medal the medal roll also mentions what looks like the "Balkans" being the theatre of war.
I now believe that as a young boy I may have borrowed my uncles Burma Star medal for a while that would account for the 4 medals that I originally mentioned.
To finalise this I must try to find the Thomas Bloomfield who joined up in th Royal Artillery on 15th Sept 1891 and was Ignominiously discharged fro the service on 31st July 1893 who seems to fit the bill but I have my doubts, but then again you never know what you find about your family.
Thanks again Sue.
