Burwell (Cambridgeshire) has a navigable channel, the Burwell Lode, that runs from the River Cam. Nearby, is the Wicken Lode (running to the village of Wicken) and Reach Lode - running to the village of Reach.
Some further resources for you (click the links):
Burwell Parish Records: these are on fiche and so you would need access to a fiche reader. You would probably be able to "borrow" one at your local family history centre.
Burwell St Mary Parish Records: These are transcriptions and would be on a CD and therefore fully searchable from the comfort of your own home.
Non-Conformist Records: Just in case you find that they were not using the Parish Church; these again are on a fiche.
Discovering Burwell: Descriptions of walks around the village.

My information on the village of Burwell is six years old now, but at that time the church was shrouded in scaffolding with 'DANGER' notices around it. Prior to that it was open and I vsited it several timeswith my cousin who was Priest in Charge of adjacent parishes. Her husband played the organ which was still there although all the pews had been removed - it was how churches would have been at one time, just an open space.
My family were there briefly in the early 1800's - Joseph Brown and Rebecca nee Bratley who baptized several children before moving to a nearby village, Legbourne. My forbear Sophia Brown was actually baptized twice - onve in Burwell and again a couple of weeks later in Legbourne
At that time, six years ago, I believe the churchyard was still in use for burials and once a year a service was held there. Things may have changed since then of course.Last edited by BeeE586; 22-03-2011 at 02:16 PM. Reason: Didn't make sense

Hi
My name is John Blackwell. I am a direct decendant of Joseph Blackwell 1811, waterman of St Ives in Huntingdonshire. Joseph in my studies of Burwell records originates from Burwell, Cambridgeshire from a family of agg labs and waterman. They transported goods from the fens up the Ouse river to St Ives. Burwell Lincolnshire in my opinion was an error by the census taker in 1841. There were no Blackwells there as far as I can see. I also contacted Lincs record office to check and make sure.
He married Eliza Famely. It is her name I am researching.

Hi John,
Welcome to the BG forum.
(I know you joined a couple of months ago, but you snuck in very quietly and missed the usual greeting.)
It's not actually me who's researching the Blackwells. I was just helping with the enquiries.
Zebrainbexhill is the person you need to contact if you haven't already done so.
