I think the pirate story might be just that. A tale put about to explain there not being a father around, especially if the mother refused to name him.
We also joke about kids looking like the postman, milkman or even the coalman. In my family kids were found under a gooseberry bush.

LOL!! I like the gooseberry bush. So no local tales of pirates raiding the farms and scooting back out to sea before the big boys at Bristol could get their boots on?? Well, doesn't hurt to ask, one never knows what amazing tales are told by the locals that might have been retold and then hauled off to other lands with emigration.
