    Default Margaret Race

I have been looking for great great grandmother on Margaret Race married to John Plender Aug. 14, 1870 in Holy Trinity Church , Washington Village, Country Durham. I would appreciate any information. I have just registered on this site and am very grateful that is here. I thank you, aplender

Hi Margaret and welcome to Brit-Gen

I have placed your enquiry into a thread of its own on the Durham Forum where it will attract more attention and better allow our members to assist.

I don't think there's any obvious connection to my own line of Races but I'll nevertheless follow the progress of your thread with interest.

Do you have any more details for Margaret please such as year and place of birth, who her parents were and if you have the marriage certificate can you tell us exactly what's it says? The more information you can provide the easier it will be for us to help.

I shall be away from the Forum until later this evening but I''ll look forward to hopefully being able to contribute in tracing Margaret further back when I return.

    Best wishes

She is on the 1871 census RG10/4993/63/4 crown copyright/care of TNA living at Old Hall Village, Washington.

Jane Plender head age 52 born Northumberland
John Plender son age 24 born Co Durham
Margaret Plender wife age 21 born Northumberland - the original says (?) Newcastle
Mary Jane Plender daughter 0 born Co Durham

The place names are on the original but I cannot decipher them - perhaps someone with local knowledge may be able to help.

Is this the info that you are looking for?

There is this family in 1871:

Jane PLENDER Head 52 born Northumberland
John PLENDER Son 24 born County Durham according to transcript but looks like it begins with B on the image (BEADHAM?)
Margaret PLENDER Wife 21 born Northumberland according to transcript but looks like something, something Newcastle on image!
Mary Jane PLENDER Daughter born 1871 Washington

    National Archive (c)
    RG number: RG10 Piece: 4993 Folio: 63 Page: 4

Too slow typing! Beaten by pennydog!

1891 they are in Fan Blast Square, Washington with 6 children (not Mary Jane tho)
    National Archive (c):
    RG number: RG12 Piece: 4124 Folio: 30 Page: 22

Her birthplace looks like Spittal Trymer ???

Looking at the 1871 to 1911 census, I think Margaret's birth place is Spital Tongues, Northumberland. Which is more or less in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

On the 1851 census there is this possibility for Margaret HO107/2387/600/11 (crown copyright/care of TNA)

Living at Market Place, Middleton, Durham

Nathan Race head age 33 lead miner
    Margaret Race wife age 32
    Mary Race daughter age 8
    Matthew Race son age 4
    MARGARET RACE daughter age 2
Phillis Watson mother in law age 70 widow
Jane Watson niece age 21 single
Thomas Watson son age 7 months

All are listed as born Middleton Durham with the exception of Jane who is born Hunderthwaite Yorkshire.

If these are your family you have Margaret Races mother's and grandmother's ages and names, very useful.

Thanks for posting the place names Olliecat and Ultramum - I found the handwriting almost unreadable (not being familiar with the area either).
