Can you give us a bit more information?

There are a number of William Carters born in Berkshire around 1873. Do you have a copy of William's birth certificate?

Do you have Richard and William together on any census - and if so which ones?

CARTER is a very common surname, we need some more information. Where was William CARTER born and what are his parents' details? This information will be on the birth certificate.

If you are just after a marriage, then if you look on FreeBMD you will see this...

    Marriages Sep 1868 Newbury 2c 377
    Barrett Jane
    Brown James
    CARTER Richard
    Seymour Rhoda

    Whether this is William's father - ?

Does the census say whereabouts in Berkshire William was born?
What does William's marriage certificate say about Richard Carter's occupation?

You need to get the birth certificate.

    Might it be this one...

Births Jun 1874 Carter William Faringdon 2c 269

I'm only guessing because you're playing your cards close to the chest but the way to work is one step at a time - trying to jump over steps only leads to mistakes.

Is this William in the 1911 census?

    1911: RG14/31733 SN17

If so, then this is likely to be him in the 1901 census

1901: RG13 Piece: 4921 Folio: 107 Page: 5 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)
At Whitecroft, West Dean (Gloucs), Monmouthshire
CARTER, William, Head, 28, Waggoner At Flour Mill, Gloster Gloucestershire
CARTER, Mary, Wife, 28, St Briavels Gloucestershire
CARTER, William, Son, 4, Alvington Gloucestershire
CARTER, Edith, Daughter, 2, Hewelsfield Gloucestershire
CARTER, Harold, Son, 3 mo, Whitecroft Gloucestershire

Which leads to a conflicting birth place.

There is a William with a father Richard in Gloucestershire in 1881. One of the siblings was born in Farringdon.
1881: RG11; Piece: 2551; Folio: 29; Page: 8 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

Perhaps you could tell us the occupation of William's father.

Looks good, olliecat. The birth of a Mary Jane Worgan was registered in the Chepstow district (which would fit with the St Briavels birthplace) in 1873; also I see the marriage of William Carter and Mary Jane Worgan was in the Chepstow district too.

Yes, according to the Gloucestershire BMD, the marriage was held at St Mary the Virgin in the parish of St Briavels.

Well, I'm probably jumping the gun now, but I thought I would investigate Richard Carter (from the 1881 census) and his wife Hannah. Well, they were both born in Berkshire and there is this possible marriage ...

    Marriages Jun 1862 Farringdon 2c 425
    CARTER Richard
    Lay Eliza
    REASON Hannah
    Stone Robert

Hannah Reason before marriage in Shrivenham, Faringdon?
1861: RG09 Piece: 727 Folio: 9 Page: 11 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

Richard Carter before marriage in Shrivenham Of Watchfield, Faringdon?
1861: RG09 Piece: 727 Folio: 24 Page: 6 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

Richard and Hannah Carter in Horsley, Gloucestershire. A number of their children were born in Berkshire. It also looks like one child was born before the marriage. Son William Carter was born in Horsely.
1871: RG10 Piece: 2640 Folio: 5 Page: 1 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

    From the Gloucestershire BMD...

    Birth
    CARTER William
    1873 Stroud, Horsley 13 4
    Father Surname: CARTER
    Mother's Former Name: REASON

Note: some of Richard and Hannah's children christenings are on family search.
