I wonder if there is a possible father James Williams in the 1871 census in Audlem or thereabouts. I'll have a look in a moment. Might be worthwhile looking into the Hope family too.
Have you looked for a birth for Frances on the Cheshire BMD?

I would have thought that if she was born in Audlem that she would be registered under the Nantwich registration district, but if she was orphaned then things may not be so clear cut. Have you asked the local register office if they can find a birth record for her?

I did look through the possible births in Ancestry - even tried looking for the possibility of her taking her mother's name if she was illegitimate -I understand that in some cases they would give their grandfather's name as being their father ? Found an Alice Williams that gave birth in Wincham -girl no name but this is a long shot !!
I will try the Cheshire BMD Web address , thanks

If you find a promising birth entry on the site, then that entry will state where the registers are held. If you then go to this page ...
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/birthinfo.php#Q3
... you will find an address for the register office in question. You could contact them by snail-mail, or if you Google, you may be able to find an email address for the office. You could ask the office to search for a birth for a Frances Williams, either with father James, or an illigitemate birth. Each office you try should search the year you specify and one year either side. You will not have to pay for a certificate if they can't find one that matches.
If I were you, I would try the Nantwich register office first, regardless of whether there's an entry or not on the Cheshire BMD.
I'm probably waffling on a bit now.
Anyway, hope you find one!

Have found the Frances Williams born in Cheshire in the right year so have sent for the certificate - fingers crossed!!
The Hope family connection has gone cold though - I looked it up and it is a male boarder called Francis not Frances - oh dear I was getting excited about that !!!! Thanks for the help though

Hi there. I realise this thread is about a year old now - but I just stumbled on it. I don't think I can help with the main question barleycup is asking - but my eye was caught by the references to Mary Millington, Post Office and Marchington. I might have the wrong person, but my mum, Alfreda Joan La Roche (always known as Joan) was born in Marchington in 1915 and one of her friends was certainly a Mary Millington - indeed I have my mum's old Birthday Book and it has entries for Nancy Millington Mrs Millington, and Mary Millington - so I think it sounds as though we are talking about the same family. I have a photo of a pantomime performed in Marchington in 1923 - Bluebeard - that has my mum and Mary Millington on it. Have you seen this before? If not, would you like a copy? I was also interested to read that you have copies of 1927 and 1933 - are these generally available? I'd like to check to see if I can find other references to my mum.

Hi stoneman333,
As barleycup has not visited the forum in nearly a year, why not send an email or Private Message to see if you can grab their attention? Click on their user name and both options are in the drop-down box that appears.
Good luck!
