Default John William Chiles in Barton Stacey

Thanks to the generosity of others in this forum I've been able to clarify a lot of problems in my work on the Chiles family centered around Barton Stacey in Hampshire. However, John William Chiles remains a big nagger, and any further help with him would be very much appreciated. The specific problem I have with him is actually his wife, who I only know by her Christian name, Mary. Briefly, then:

John William Chiles (born abt. 1817 at Barton Stacey, died Q4 1907 at Andover) had 10 children with Mary between 1848 and 1868. I have details of these children, but I have no clue as to when Mary and John were married -- I assume it must have been just prior to 1848 though -- or what Mary's maiden name was. I do have what I believe to be Mary's death date (Q3 1898 at Andover) at age 73, which matches up closely with her age as given in the censuses. I might have to order up a birth certificate for one of the children -- I believe they provide the mother's maiden name -- but if anyone has a suggestion that can circumvent this I'd love to hear it. Many thanks.

    Hi
I have no idea where BARTON STACEY, can you clarify that for me please, only 1 marriage shows up in Cambersweell 1840 to a Mary Head, he is John Charles Augustus Chiles, I suspect this is not the one, to be honest I think it might be best to purchase a certificate for the one you think may be nearest your blood line from the list of 10 children you have

    regards

I noticed in the 1851 census that the surname Chiles has been transcribed as CHILDS.

1851: HO107 Piece: 1683 Folio: 50 Page: 20 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

There is also a sister-in-law Charlotte STEVENS in the house. Also Mary was born in Hurstbourne Priors (Whitchurch reg district)

    Could this be their marriage?

    Marriages Mar 1847 Whitchurch H 7 267
    Ballard Charles
    Childs John William
    CHILDS John William
    Stevens Mary

Barton Stacey is in Hampshire, not too far from Andover. "Barton Stacey is a village and civil parish in the Test Valley district of Hampshire, England, situated about seven miles (11 km) south-east of Andover" as Wikipedia says. I too looked at John Charles Augustus Chiles & Mary Head, but Camberwell didn't work. Thanks for the thought, though. - Patrick

    This is certainly it.

The only Mary of the appropriate age (i.e. born 1825 in Hurstbourne Priors on the 1871 Census) in 1841 is Mary Stevens, age 15, living at Sprat’s Down, Hurstbourne Priors (HO 107; Piece: 391; Book: 11; Folio: 9; Page: 12) and on FreeBMD there’s the marriage to a John William Childs at “Whitchurch H” (i.e. Hampshire) in March Quarter 1847.

Charlotte's also on the 1841 Census age 9.

Olliecat, Hi: Sorry not to have replied sooner, but it looks as though you've nailed it. Thank you so much. Existence of the 'sister-in-law' Charlotte Stevens more or less clinches it. Amazing! -- Patk
