    Default Co Mayo Newspapers.

Can anyone tell me which newspapers covered Co. Mayo during 1830/40's? Am looking for coverage of a trial in January 1837. All I know is it was in Co. Mayo. Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Thanks. Jeddah.

    Hello Jeddah,

Have a look at the County Mayo page from GENUKI and you will see that the Connaught Telegraph is your best bet. It has been in circulation since 1828, so should cover the years that you are searching.

At http://www. nli.ie/en/catalogues-and-databases-printed-newspapers.aspx you can find out what newspapers The National Library of Ireland holds. The database is searchable by place of publication. There are some published in Castlebar, I see, including the Mayo Constitution and the Telegraph, or Connaught Ranger, which both appear to have been published at the date you want. There's a list of Mayo newspapers, this time in alphabetical order, at http://www. mayolibrary.ie/en/LocalStudies/Newspapers/

I started looking for online newspapers but so far no luck: http://www. irelandoldnews.com/Mayo/index.html lists some Mayo newspapers but doesn't yet have any coverage for 1837. I can't see anything for this period on the Irish Newspaper Archives site either, except perhaps Freeman's Journal (published in Dublin), which you can also see on the British Library 19th Century Newspapers site or via Gale Cengage (your local library may provide access to this).

You might want to try searching the name on here:
    http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search/index.php
and hopefully you will find the crime, punishment, court case, ship details and document details.

    Hi Jeddah,
You can access 19th Century British Newspapers online if you are a member of the National Library of Australia. You can join online and a readers ticket will be sent. Once you have it you log on and go to e-resources. There are 3 choice - the ones you can access anywhere, the ones you can only access whilst at the library. You want the third option. Once there use the alphabetized index and go to 'N'. Bingo!
