Default Andover and the Chiles Family

I'm looking for information in re. to the Chiles family who lived in the Andover area, specifically around Barton Stacey and a place called "The Ruins." John Chiles (1848-1919) married Emily Mary Starnes (1858-1924) who was related to my mother's side of my family. I am very interested in this family connection and would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to throw some light on it.

Sarah Letitia Chiles. Jun qtr. 1888. Staines. 3a 12

Large gap between 1883 and 1888?

I think the key could well be Ada Agnes Starnes born September Quarter, 1887, in Staines RD. (Free BMD)

In the 1891 Census (RG12 piece 1007 folio 57 page 8) Ada is living with her Grandmother Sarah Starnes and her aunts Annie and Elsie who were Emily Mary’s sisters (see 1871 Census: RG10 piece 1305 folio 104 page 25).

Fairly certainly Ada Agnes was the daughter of Emily Mary & John Chiles (see Thread 2). Her birth was in Harlington (not Darlington!), Middlesex. Harlington is very close to Sipson and Harmondsworth where others in the family lived (e.g. Percy and Ethel in the 1891 Census).

In the 1901 Census (RG13 piece 1113 folio 24 page 13) Ada is staying with the Chiles’ in “The Ruins”, Barton Stacey.

I think Ada’s birth certificate may clinch this.

    More to come.

By the way, I’m fairly certain that from studying the 1901 census for Barton Stacey and the map here: bartonstacey.parish.hants.gov.uk/about/bsabout11map.html (put www in front) that the house called “The Ruins” (next to ‘The Vicarage’ RG) is now called “The Rowans” (even though it’s not visible on Google Streetview).

... and so Earl Chiles from the 1901 Census is the brother of John Chiles born 1848 and both are the sons of John W Chiles and he’s a carpenter (1861 Census: RG09 piece 713 folio 27 page 13).

    Malcolm99, Hi:

Ada Agnes is definitely the daughter of Annie Starnes. I did get the birth certificate which confirms this and it shows no father's name. Likewise, when Ada married the "father's name" box for her on the wedding certificate was empty. Annie married Henry Daniels in 1907, but whether he was Ada's father can probably now never be determined. Much obliged for all the information, though.
