Would appreciate some help with my GGF who left abruptly shortly after the 1911 Census
and headed out to, family lore has it, Sydney.
I have just found a likely candidate on the NSW Unassisted Passenger Lists, giving a J Jones, born Bromley (true - Bow, London), age given 36 ( DOB 14 April 1873 - baptism). The " Mamari" left london 6 May and arrived in Sydney 15 June 1911 en route to Wellington NZ.
Of course I turned to the FIndmyPast UK departures lists but cannot find him there.
It would be very good to find out how to get a embarkation list for the Mamari on that voyage - how should I go about that ? I couldn't see the voyage on a search of Ships List.
He was a merchant navy seaman and a ships hairdresser.
Any help or hints - much appreciated

If you just put surname JONES, ship name Mamari and arrival date 1911 into that Findmypast database, you'll discover the first name of one J. Jones on board. It may spoil your theory I'm afraid.
Have you tried the Australian Death Index on Ancestry? You might pick up Joseph there.

I will have to e-mail FindmyPast - the refine search facility doesn't work.
What name is it and what details ?
I have found the Mamari passenger lists departing via the National archives which links to FMP and found that it doesn't show the Crew.
On arrival in Sydney J Jones is a crew member and "G.S." whatever that makes him, and I expect male sex.

I was searching via the Ancestors on Board site,
http://www.
ancestorsonboard.com/
I can only see the free search results, but there was a Jno (John) Jones on that voyage, destined for NZ, and three other Joneses.
If Joseph went out as a crew member you could try looking for crew lists: there's some advice in this research guide.Last edited by Coromandel; 13-02-2011 at 8:49 PM. Reason: To add link to research guide

Thankyou -phew, I am not worried (yet) ! - the names are all of passengers, the crews are not shown. The arrival list in Sydney, where the ship stopped en route to NZ, has him. Perhaps I need to contact TNA to see if they have the Crew list on departure ?

I have looked for the ship's crew in the suggested guides. If Joseph went out as a crew member you could try looking for crew lists: there's some advice in this research guide.
I've found references for the years 1913 onwards but not for 1911 at the Maritime History Archive
www.
mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcrews.php?Official_No=119697
and the TNA guides explain how the Agreements and Crew Lists were split up - 10% here and 10% there etc- and haven't found that voyage/crew in the TNA.
Where should I go next - ideas or hints very welcomeLast edited by Kerrywood; 15-02-2011 at 5:41 PM. Reason: removed direct link to a site that sells services

According to the Crew List Index Project (CLIP), http://www.
crewlist.org.uk/index.html, there are crew lists for the 'Mamari' for 1906 and 1908 at Southampton Archives. On the CLIP website it says 'In some cases, the CLIP transcription is incomplete, so there may be more crew lists for the vessel than we have shown.' So it may just be worth checking with Southampton if they have any later lists too. But perhaps the 1911 list just hasn't survived?
