Default only clue born 1821 Eling on 1841 Census

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me figure out where to go next. My 3rd Gr Grandfather appears on
the 1841 Census as a 20 year old Sawyer born Eling. Nothing else and the family he is living with has a different name. How do I find out more about his family from 1821. With a name of George Taylor the IGI has many possibilities.

The 1841 census doesn't in fact give birthplaces (except to say whether born in that county or not) or show relationships to the head of household. Importantly too, the ages of those aged 15 or upwards were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5. So George could have been up to 24 years old.

The later censuses are much more informative: have you found him on any of those?

Before you try to find his baptism (which may not be in the IGI at all), have you found his marriage? A marriage certificate would show you his father's name and occupation and so it would be a great help in narrowing down which George Taylor is yours.

dadsfamily, could you tell us a little more about George. Who did he marry, what were the names of his children. The more information we have on him, the more we will be able to help (hopefully.)

I don't suppose his wife's was names Jane was she? If so, there is an interesting 1861 census. However, I'll wait till you tell us a bit more about George.

As mentioned by other members on this thread - the only way to be certain you follow George's correct ancestry is to buy his marriage cert.

There is a possible christening on Family Search Beta: George Taylor, 15/10/1820, at Eling, Hampshire, parents: Isaac and Eliza.

Well that could fit Lizzy, if George's wife was called Jane, since there was a mariage between a Jane Fryer and a George Taylor in 1856 in Southampton and George's father was recorded as Isaac. Note: Jane was possibly a second wife.

However, we really need dadsfamily to tell more about George.

Yes Olliecat, if we are following the correct George it does appear he had a first wife named Sarah.

George Taylor did marry Jane Fryer but that is all I know.

I haven't been able to find a marriage I tried searching before and after the birth of the first son John (as per the 1861 Census) but couldn't find anything. I never thought about Jane being a second wife. My connection is through Isaac William Taylor and I wasn't even aware he had siblings.
