During my research I have come across a very tragic case of an 'infant cot death' in the early 1960's .Would there have been an inquest and coroners report for a cot death where there was no previous medical problem.

You would normally expect an inquest in these circumstances, and the death certificate will confirm whether or not there was one.
Coroners' records are not always kept for more than 15 years, and those that are kept are normally closed for 75 years. But once you know the coroner's district (from the death certificate) it may be worth asking the local office about their access policy.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like the 1st thing to do is obtain a copy of the death cert. but with living relatives I will have to tread carefully and consult family members. i found a back issue of Family history mag. and there was an article on Coroners and inquests that was helpful.

Hi colwyn
Unless there is a strong reason for researching further I would stay right away from it, in fact I wouldn't even get a copy of the death certificate. It has the potential to cause family friction very easily.
