I haven't seen the Ancestry record but this could well be "The London Hospital" in Whitechapel, now the Royal London Hospital

I've looked for a lot of Henry Taylors who were in the West Ham area in 1901 (3 years before Ellen's marriage to Herbert) but there is no sign of a Henry who is a slaughterman.

Has anyone got any ideas of how to locate Ellen prior to her marriage as it's really annoying me that I can't find anything about her before or after her marriage.

    Robin,

What age did it give for Ellen on the marriage certificate? Did it give an occupation or address for her?

Ellen's age at the time of the marriage was 24 and no occupation was given for her.

Unfortunately, I think her "father" may have been invented.

I've looked back over the thread but cannot seem to see if you found them in 1911?

    If not....
Herbert Crouch, born 1883 in Poplar, a carman is home alone on the transcription.
However, if you click the original he is married 4 years, to an Elizabeth with two children, Herbert age 2 and Ethel age 4 months. I know it says Elizabeth but the rest is very close.

1911: RG14, (PN) Piece Number 9438, (SN) Schedule Number 223, (records held by TNA, Crown copyright)

I think this is the Herbert and Elizabeth you've found:

    Marriages Sep 1908
    CROUCH *Herbert George * *London C. *1c 6 **
    SHIELDS *Elizabeth Sarah * *London C. *1c 6

Yes, I found the marriage and I cannot find another Herbert (George) with an Elizabeth in 1911 so I presume they are the couple in post 25. That's a shame.

I'm starting to think that they didn't want to be found!
