Default Handsaker licensee, Southampton, 1910s ?

I have an old group photo which includes my grandfather, and I wonder if the pub can be identified. Over the pub doorway the licensee's name is J T Handsaker. My grandfather (born 1883) lived in Southampton, and didn't come back after volunteering in late 1914, so I guess the picture was taken between 1900 and 1914, probably at the later end.

I can't find a Handsaker in Southampton in 1901 and the 1911 site has no hits. Any ideas?

I realise you do not know the name of the pub or if it still exists but this site features pubs in Southampton.
Maybe an address will be familiar.

Best suggestions I can make are:

Directories - there is usually a listing by surname. Try historical-directories web-site

Telephone Directory - Perhaps Mr Handsaker remained at the pub for sometime. Maybe try the tel.directories online?

Probate - Did Mr Handsaker remain licensee and die at the pub? Try the probate calendar on the pay-per-view site 'ancenstry'

Any reference in the Hampshire RO or Southampton Archives web-sites, or via Access to Archives?

If your assumption that it was somewhere in Southampton is correct, the answer is probably in Southampton Archives - their catalogue includes -
    • Lists of Licensed Victuallers 1829-1935
    • Public Houses and Clubs: registers 1900, 1903-1923, 1941-1957; on-licenses 1941-1955; off licenses 1941-1955

I don't know how you would overcome the obvious logistical problem

There was a John T Handsaker that married in Croydon, Surrey in 1919 to Adelaide Ray but I cannot find any reference to the name in Hampshire.

Along the lines Mutley is treading,..Barbara can you guess at the age of your Grandfather in the photo?
Does it have to be in Hampshire just because he lived there?
Where did he join up when he volunteered?
Could he have been visiting Family ?
Why not a mens' get together 'out of town'?.. perhaps to do with his work.
Oh I could just go on & on but I'm going to lunch instead. Have a nice one every-body.
    Happy Families

Another thought - have you looked on FreeBMD for clues? For example a John T HANDSAKER married Q2 1919 in Croydon; a John Thomas HANDSAKER married Q2 1907 Chelsea (who was poss. born Q1 1878 Lichfield). If you look for him in the census that might ID whether he is a candidate (e.g. a publican)

The 1911 census reference RG14PN3681 RG78PN138 RD42 SD2 ED28 SN102 crown copyright/care of TNA appears to be this man in Bromley.

I suspect J. T. Handsaker may have been in Southampton between the two censuses.
In 1911 there is a John Thomas Handsaker living in Bromley, Kent. He has a three year old daughter Elsie who was born in St Denys Southampton (ie about 1908).
If you have any luck with Southampton Archives the St Denys address may help a little to pin down the pub.
