Thought it might be useful to find some of the children marriages. Possibly ...
    • Phoebe ELLETT to Thomas YEOMAN on 16 Oct 1815 at St John the Baptist, Frome. Witnesses: William ELLIOTT?, H CRUSE
    • Caroline ELLIOTT to Job WHITE on 06 Mar 1821 at St John the Baptist, Frome. Witnesses: Wm CHUBB, H CRUSE
    • Edna ELLETT to Thomas YEOMAN on 29 Jun 1828 at St John the Baptist, Frome. Witnesses: Samuel COOMBS, H CRUSE
Note: H Cruse is likely a hired witness; the name crops up on a lot of marriages.

Will check to see if there were any other Edna's, Carolines or Phoebe's born in the area, since Elliot is quite a common name.

That is interesting about the Baptism and the Wedding day being the same day, Nov 27th... Could it be that he needed to wait until he was 17 to get married?

Thanks for this olliecat, I think this is most likely the Rachel Oborn I'm looking for.

Hi Bertie, the only thing I know is that when he signed on for the RM he was in Winchester and it stated that he came from the 2nd Somerset Militia. I don't know of any records for the members of the militia, is there something I can research there in Frome?

War Office Militia Attestation Papers 1806-1915 (WO96) are held at the National Archives - see this page. They will be available on the subscription site findmypast around Sep 2011.

However, if your Joseph left the militia when he was 20, that may be just before the date the records start.

Yes he lived and I found him in Nunney, near Frome working as a mason. I have his original pay records from the ship which tell me he didn't take his tobacco rations, and all sorts of interesting stuff. The ones who died even had their pay charged for the dead mans clothes before it was given to the widow! He married a girl from Nunney, Francis Budgett and they had lots of kids. But problems seemed to be the rule for them, especially when 2 of their daughters gave birth to illegitimates within 3 weeks of each other at a house near Bath in 1837. Francis was with them and registered the births but both boys were eventually put in the Bath Union Workhouse with Francis. The daughters Ann and Sarah kind of disappeared although I did find that Sarah had her boy Edwin for almost a year before he was put in the workhouse. My great grandfather James was the one of them who survived and eventually married a girl from Southampton and emigrated to the US. Joseph then appears in Middlesex in 1851 as a widower mason from Nunney. Not so sure about why he would be there but I think he died the following year at the Bath Union Workhouse. This is getting too long now but it must have been strange for these young guys at Trafalgar to become "heros" at 20 or 21. I think it must have complicated their lives...

...by the way, never found him in the 1841 census for sure. However I did see a mason with that name in Bath in 1841.

I have the copies of the original attestation papers from 21 Apr 1805 when he was 20 but these were when he signed on with the Royal Marines. I think you're right and he left right before these documents start...

I don't know but stranger things have happened. I double-checked the name on FreeREG yesterday - in case I was having an odd moment but please check it for yourself. How common is the name Yeoman I wonder. Could try and find them in the census.
