Just found his Attestation signature 10.5.09 B Division, will look further on flickr for a leaving date - will have to
think outside the box as he's not in the 1909 region dates transcribed on the TNA site

A fly in the ointment.... His marriage record in 1926 ( on Ancestry) has him as Ernest W Steward, and his BMD birth record has just Ernest. I will obtain Certificates and add more info

Is the marriage reference from the GRO index or something else on that pay-per-view site which provides more detail?

If from the GRO idnex, I notice that there are three Ernest A Steward marriages up to 1930 and several Ernest W's in the same period.
Is the 1926 entry you have found definitely correct?
