    Default Name on headstone query

On a family headstone there is listed, along with my ancestor, his two wives and numerous of their children..'Jane, grand-daughter of the above..'
Am I correct in assuming that the absence of a surname suggests the grandchild shared the same surname with her grandparents, ie if she had a different surname would both her names be on the headstone?

I would agree that it suggests that but you never know. It would depend on what the family asked for when they went to the stonemason.

I think she is the child of my ancestors' eldest (unmarried) daughter as none of their other children, born early enough to have produced a child at that time, survived beyond childhood. Unfortunately, I only have a transcript of the headstone so the child's age or date of death may not even be accurate. I missed the entry when I first read the transcript and now I'm curious to find out who she was.

Have you tried contacting the cemetery to see if they have further information about the occupants of the grave?

No, absence of a surname only shows no surname was carved on the headstone.
Remember carving is charged by the letter.
The person who arranged the memorial possible thought stating the Christian name of the deceased and that she was the grand-daughter of the above identified her enough.

Depending how old the grave is and the church or cemetery there may be a grave book that gives further details.
    Cheers
