What it does not show, is where on earth is Edward, missing from four census?

He was 20 years older than Constance May.
I believe he is in the Plumstead / Woolwich area but his age is wrong or like Constance he used another name in the census or he is wrongly transcribed.

    I'll keep looking ....

Sorry, I have to give up.

I have found a William John Hunter born 1851 in Woolwich and married to a Mary.
In previous census he was a Bombardier in the Royal Artillery and in 1911 worked on explosives at the Royal Arsenal
but unless he is an uncle I cannot sort out a relationship between him and Edward or Walter.

    Going way back.....
There was a marriage between a William Hunter and an Elizabeth Lockwood in Mansfield, Nottingham in 1756.
A Jeremiah Lockwood Hunter baptised in 1793 and his parents were William Hunter and Elizabeth.
Check out the IGI. They are the only references I can find to Lockwood and Hunter together.

    Hi Mutley
Thanks for this info. I have the marriage cert for Edward and Constance May Gaywood (normally called May by the family). This was Edwards second marriage. I cannot find his first mainly because I don't have any idea of first wifes name, where he was born or living before his second marriage. Walter Hunter was deceased on marriage date. Yes it was May's aunt Martha that she was living with and Richard and Millie was her parents. I also have birth cert for Edward/May's son but this only confirms he was an explosive engineer. Have not had the time to look up London Gazette as yet.
    Regards

    Hi Peter
yes thats correct no cert for Edward. I have no clues to where he was born either. Only have rumours from family members no longer with us that he possibly came from Newcastle area or Scotland but this is far from being anything like the true whereabouts.
    Not much help I'm afraid??

I really think that the key to your brickwall is finding Edward or Walter in a census.

There are many members who love trawling through the census and are very good at finding the illusive. However, the title of your thread and the military forum may put them off even opening the thread thinking that they cannot help.

I suggest you start a new thread looking for Edward and Walter in the census, then we would have an idea of the birth place. If it is Scotland then some members have access to the very good records there.
You can link it to this thread, if you don't know how to do that, then should you start a new thread, I will do it for you.

    Good Luck

Default Edward Hunter Explosives Expert (linked)

Edit by Geoffers, moderator - Bobn had created a third thread on Edward HUNTER and this was the first post in the thread. Three threads on one person will get everyone confused. I have merged it in which Bobn's oriignal request for information on Edward HUNTER to avoid too much confusion

I have posted requests on the Military forum and Census forum for Edward Hunter (Explosives Expert) born 1877. On retirement I believe he took up the running of a pub in the Carshalton Surrey area, possibly about 1920.
All known information can be read on those 2 forums to get the family background.
    Any information would be welcome.

Bobn. think it will get very confusing having three threads on one person so I have merged two together and left the thread on census requests alone, but with a link (above).

In looking for your chap I would suggest yo begin with directories. Try the historic-directory web-site or even telephone directories (try the pay-per-view site 'ancestry'). Once you have the name of the pub an when your chap first appeared there, you can look t see if it is still a going concern and whether the pub/brewery has any more information.

To reflect this thread taking a new direction and as things seem stuck with your ol'bor I've moved the thread to the 'Brickwalls' forum, which more reflects its present state. The thread can always be moved again if needed.

If Walter HUNTER had died - did he leave a will? The Probate Calendar up to 1941 is available on the pay-per-view site 'ancestry' and may be worth a browse if only for elimination purposes. The calendar contains a lot more detail that the GRO indices and may give your research a kickstart.

If you cannot find the family in records for England and Wales and they came from north of the border, have you tried the pay-per-view site 'Scotland's People'?

When Edward HUNTER died did he leave a will in which he mentions previously unknown relatives (children, siblings, cousins, etc)?
