I would like more information on isolation hospitals were during the 1920's.
I had a great aunt who worked at an islolation hospital but I have not been able to decipher her letter enough to know where this hospital was located. She was from Liverpool and possibly went to London.
I've found no records on her other than her birth record and one census record from when she was a young girl.
If anyone could assist with trying to decipher her handwriting I'd definitely be willing to send you a scanned copy of the letter.

If you can put the scan on a web site we could all have a look!!!
In the meantime you could try the Hospital Records Database
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/
Try entering just "isolation" as the Hospital Name. This will give you a long list (not necessarily a complete list) but you might see something that you can tie up with Aunty's handwriting.Peter Goodey

As Peter says if you could put the scan on a site similar to photobucket you can then download it to here.
Someone may be able to read it for you.
Meanwhile, if Auntie is not still living you could also give us her name and date of birth and we could try and find her in the census for you. Many eyes make light work.

See if you can find her, or any clues, in the Royal College of Nursing Archives -- free access.

Here is a copy of her letter (hope this link works) and any information I have on her which unfortunately isn't much because my grandfather didn't stay in contact with his family for long after he moved to Canada.
The letter is not dated, nor was there an envelope with it. She mentioned sending her brother (my grandfather) a book and it sounds as if he is likely still quite young so I'm not sure if he received this letter before he immigrated to Canada in 1929 or beforehand.

This is too funny --- As soon as I saw the list of isolation hospitals her handwriting made sense. I think it says Bennets End, Hemel Hempstead.
Can anyone tell me where Hemel Hempstead is located ? The British location names really confuse me

That's it - Bennetts End, H Hempstead. If you look at the details on the Hospital Records Database, you'll see a potted history.
There are plenty of online maps to use. Just googling the name of the place will get you to Google maps. Or try streetmap.co.uk.Peter Goodey

Hemel is in Hertfordshire.
According to Wikipedia
www.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennetts_End
"Just before the First World War, Bennetts End was chosen as the location for Hemel Hempstead's isolation hospital, construction of which commenced in 1914. The hospital, on St Albans Hill had a total of 45 beds, and was used to isolate patients with infectious diseases until its closure in 1952."

Nothing leaps out.
Isolation hospitals dealt with infectious diseases that needed quarantine precautions etc and were often the old Fever or Smallpox hospitals.

Hi there,
Bennetts End, Hemel Hempstead is in Hertfordshire, about 15 miles northwest of London. It might still be there. Could be worth looking at the local newspaper archives - The Watford Observer.
