Hi Everyone,
Emily Meaden is my GGGrandmother but she is a mystery woman!
In 1850, she and her husband Henry Butler, had a son, Henry Meaden Butler in Melbourne, Victoria Australia. I have a lot of information about the Henry Meaden Butler family but nothing about his parents. They are listed on his death certificate by name only.
I can only find one Emily Meaden in England - 1841 census - Dorset. About the right age if she had her son about the age 20 down in Oz.
But no record of where, when she married or travelled to Australia.
This is my personal family history quest as Meaden is my middle name and it is the one name that I haven't been able to find anything about! So frustrating for such an unusual name.
Hoping someone can assist.
Cheerio, Julie

what makes you think that Emily came from England? Couldn't she have been born in OZ? Have you found her marriage? If so what does that say? I think you need to investigate Emily & Henry in Oz first. (unless you know something you're not telling us)

if you get the birth certificate it should tell you when and where the couple married.

Hm, unable to find a birth for Henry Meaden Butler in Victoria or anything similar.
I note that in a tree in Ancestry he married a Virginia Howell on 11 April 1876 in Ararat - but this event is not in the indexes either.Doug

Hi,
Thanks for the advice but yes I have tried to find them in Oz to no avail. I worked out the birth year of Henry Meaden Butler from his death certificate.
So yes, I am stumped. I have looked for her in the states of Australia that have easy online index access.
Any other ideas?
Cheerio,
Julie

Tricky indeed.
There are these Victorian births which are interesting:
Name: BUTLER, Walter Madden
Father: Henry Madden BUTLER
Mother: Eliza WILLIAMS
Birth Place: MELB
Year: 1860
Reg Number: 6471
Name: BUTLER, Edwin Meaden
Father: Henry Meaden BUTLER
Mother: Eliza WILLIAMS
Birth Place: MELB
Year: 1865
Reg Number: 3662
I wonder if it would be worth getting a certificate to see if your Henry is an earlier sibling? The second birth is definitely Edwin Meaden Butler as he appears in Victorian electoral rolls at a later point in time.Doug

from the birth entries found by Procat it appears as though you need to try searching for Eliza instead of Emily. There are 6 on the 1841 UK Census born between 1811 and 1839. Have you tried searching for her death which ought to give a clue as to when she was born? Meaden is not a particularly common surname.

Richard and Jane along with their 3 youngest sons appear on the 1851 census still in Dorset.
