Default David Thomas Levi - everything but the birth!

Can anyone make any suggestions? My grandfather, David Thomas Levi, appears in the Census returns from 1871 through to 1911. In 1871 the return shows his age as 0. There is a reference to him in the West Glam County Archives, the Wright's 1908 Bristol Directory and the Kelly's 1920 Directory. However I cannot find any record for his birth anywhere! I have tried FMP, Ancestry, FreeBMD and the LDS.
On each Census return he is shown as having been born in Glamorganshire. His parents were Thoams Levi and Mary Thomas and he was one of 12 children.
Can anyone think of anything that I might have missed?

Do you know if his dad was in the army?

Do you know when his parents married (as he illegitimate)?

    Were his siblings births registered?

Have you tried any variant spellings of the name?

It may be a problem with interpretation of the handwriting when compiling the birth registration index:

David Levig and also David Leviy

Thank you both. Especially for the name variation. That is something that I always overlook. I had tried looking for military births and overseas births (the family were in America between 1862 & 1869). I haven't tried looking for the sibling registrations - something again I hadn't taken into account. Still learning - but will improve!!
    Thank you again.
