I am currently trying to build a picture of the life of David Foster, and would appreciate any help, information or photos from any other researcher or relative who may have any details.
He was born in Hull, lived and worked as a Grocer in Great Driffield in 1871, then in Selby, Yorkshire from at least 1881 to 1917 (as a Provisions Merchant). He married Jane Rimmington in 1884 at Hull Registry.
Many thanks

Hi, is this the same David Foster (nephew of John who lived at 'Park House', Provisions Merchant in Selby). In 1881 John was living with his daughter Jeanette (aged 9, who married Arthur Frank Stray in 1897 and had two sons - John Foster Stray (born 1900) and George Francis Stray (1901)), his wife Rebecca (who was 20 years younger), older son Robert John Foster (17).
If this the same David Foster, then I can help with the tree , members of which are extant in the Cayman Islands.

just how much info. do you have? Have you got the Census details, or that he was the son of Robert born Selby about 1814 and Mary born Crowle, Lincolnshire about 1818 (from Census)? Robert was (I believe) the son of Robert & Jane although there was also another Robert born in Selby in 1812.
This caught my attention for several reasons. I live in Hull, but my family has lived in Selby for over 100 years. I also have a David Foster but born Crowle about 1855.
You could try contacting Selby FHS, they are a small but very helpful group. selbydistrictfamilyhistory.btck.co.uk/ put http://www. in front.

Hi Alan
This is probably David's birth:
Name: FOSTER, David
Registration District: Hull
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1848
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Volume No:22
Page No:398
Historic directories will be worth searching as David was a trader.
Have you found David on all the census?

Hi Elaine,
No I think this is a different Foster family, which is a great shame.
My thread starts around 1811 with the birth of Thomas Foster in Selby. He had moved to Crowle by 1841 where he was working as a flax merchant with a John Brunyee on the High Street opposite Potts Lane.
I can email a handwritten family tree if that might help. It was drawn up by the Foster family living in the Caymans.

Hi Alan
I'm sure we can find you lots of information if you can just confirm that the birth above is your man.

Hi. This is definitely the same David Foster - he was also staying with his Uncle John and the others you mention at Park House in 1881. I have built quite a picture from facts e.g. censuses, BMD records, but there are many little questions I would love to find answers for, the sort of things living relatives may remember. E.g. what exactly did he do as a Provisions Merchant; was he the same David Foster who was President of Selby Liberal Association in 1889; was he living at 234 Cavendish Road, Balham in the 1920s? And I would really love to discover a photo e.g. wedding? Here's hoping,
Alan

Hi Alan
There is a section on this forum that describes occupations very well.
You could try historic directories and electoral rolls at the local library.

Hi Richard,
This is the same person, actual birth 4 Dec 1848. Although I have built quite a picture from facts e.g. censuses, BMD records, there are many little questions I would love to find answers for, the sort of things living relatives may remember. E.g. what exactly did he do as a Provisions Merchant; was he the same David Foster who was President of Selby Liberal Association in 1889; was he living at 234 Cavendish Road, Balham in the 1920s?
