    Default 5 New Dorset Str, Brighton in 1920

    Can anyone please help - was the above address a boarding house or sanitorium in 1920. OH's GGF died there of TB but, this was not his home address and I wondered if he went to Brighton for health reasons. Any help would really be appreciated. Tons of luv Hilda

    Can't help with 1920 but in 1911 no 5 was 2 dwellings with 3 rooms each, the street consisted of mainly houses with 2 of each number...duplexes? maybe number 5 was made into 1 dwelling by 1920, sorry can't be more help

    Hi Valg, many thanks for 1911 info - was hoping there was a reverse phone directory for 1920 or a "reverse" electoral roll - anything to help identify why he was there. Tons of luv, Hilda

    Those sources provide little detail and can be difficult to search in this way.

    Your best bet might be to try a directory, either available via The Parish Chest or you might try the historical-directories web-site (easily found with a search engine).

    Directories usually have a nominal list of entries, a list by street and also list businesses by their type. Limited information is given fo each entry and it may not help in this case; but directories can be good guides to an area.

    The closest entry I’ve found is in Kelly’s 1918 Directory of Sussex where the only entry for New Dorset Street, Brighton is: No. 4, Chas Hy Prodger – shopkeeper.

    your welcome, maybe the 2 numbers 5's were turned into 1 dwelling post 1911.
