How do I find out which Record Office holds the records for my ancestors. I have the Vol. and Page numbers (18 117, 6a 489, 6a 477, 6a 484). These Vols. are for the Ward, Martin and Davies families in Newport, Shropshire/Staffordshire between April 1849 and Nov. 1892. Apparently Newport straddled these two counties at the time, so I seem to have lots of options with regard to Record Offices.

These references appear to be for post-1837 births, deaths or marriages and are only relevant for certificates ordered from the General Register Office
Most people find it most convenient to just deal with GRO as a one-stop shop for certificates.
You can also order from a local Register Office (not Record Office) but then you have to mess about working out which office is the right one. If you really want to work that way, this list of districts is invaluable.

Birth marriage and death certificates, for which I assume that these are references, are held by the relevant register office rather than the CRO. In any case these seem to be the GRO birth, marriage and death index entries (from FreeBMD, FMP or Ancestry?) in which case you need to order the certificates from GRO rather than from the register office, the latter use a different system and usually do not recognise the GRO references.

Hi
The Vol & Page numbers you referred to are only relevent to the purchase of certificates from the General Register Office. If you want to purchase them from the Local Register Office (not record office) then you would need to know which office holds them.
The link below may help.
