From a will of 1755 I have:
`the rest of my wearing apparel both *i***en and woollen I leave to my executors to sell or dispose of`.
This is the only word in a 200line will I cannot translate. It could be 6 or 7 letters with 2 or 3 between the i & e.
What was worn other than Wollen clothing by mid C18th males?
Thanks for your suggestions,
Mitch

At a guess I would go for Viking's suggestion.....silken.

My first guess was linen, but think B.V has it correct with silken.

Thanks for the thoughts.
I am going to try and rule out silken, simply because between the i & e there are no upright characters(l/k) but a jumble of what could be m/n/r. The starting letter looks like a 2 with a curl round at the bottom - much like I have seen a Q written in the victorian era registers. It does not look anything like the `l` on the next line of text or I might have gone for `linnen` (sic) myself....
Think I am going to remain defeated for a bit longer...
Many thanks
Mitch

Any chance you could scan, cut and send the word to photobucket and then paste it here?

Can you get access to another Will from that era? It might use the word also.

At that date, silk was a fabric that only the rich could afford, and cotton was not yet widely available. All men's shirts and collars and underwear were made of linen. Given the difficulty in turning the fibre into cloth, it was too valuable to throw out, and like woolen garments appear as legacies in many wills of the time. I've looked at many wills of the period, and I have not doubt that it will prove to be "linen." pw

Did you know that apparel doesn't include shoes and socks?
