I'm sure this is a great site but it seems so sophisticated and therefore unclear to one, like me, who is not skilled with this kind of site. I'm new and I have no idea how I post my name interests or find my profile.
And if I do, then what?

Hi Britmaggie
If you look at the very top of the page you will see a menu item called Quick Links. Left click your mouse on it and you will see a drop down menu. One of the items is called User CP. If you click on this it takes you to your profile. There are several things you can have a look at on the menus along the left side. You can either place your name interests in your profile or to make them even more obvious create a signature e.g. "Cheers Britmaggie" (or even use your proper name if that doesn't make you feel uncomfortable) and then add a new line setting out the names you are researching. If you look at some of the threads you can see that quite a lot of subscribers have done something similar.
You may also be interested to know that when you are in a thread and you want to know about the person who has posted a reply, if you click on their forum name (in blue type in the box to the left) it will take you to their public profile.
Hope that helpsTony

Not quite, Tony. The FAQs state:
The signature option is awarded for the quality of the posts made. It is a privilege that has to be earned. Recommendations for signatures can only be made to the Administrator by Super Moderators. When the signature option is awarded, you can set your signature by editing your profile.

Hi britmaggie,
Like you, I am also new to this site & yes I have similar problems to you.
My first reaction to the complexities of learning something new was to 'give up'.
I almost did, then decide no, I won't give up.
Other more experienced people find there way around this site with relative ease & will try to help.
However, there appears to be no substitute for learning for yourself.
If the help goes over your head, as it did with me, then you have an 'easy life' choice.
Your choice will be evident, If this thread ends here.

Hi Britmaggie,
If ever I go to a new site for the first time, I look at the home page, and then click on all of the options to see where they take me. It doesn't take long to suss things out, and as others have said, there are always people around to help if you go wrong.
Good luck!

I am indebted to Jan1954 for putting me right on the signature bit. Because I changed mine without let or hindrance I assumed that this option was open to all. Just goes to show!

Hi Britmaggie

I know how you feel – I was the same. But soon with help and encouragement from Pam and the others I have learned to find my feet (sort of!). But there are still things that seem a bit daunting to me, but usually I get there in the end with perseverance and searching for advice. Nine times out of ten someone has already asked the questions I seek and there are always lots of people who know the answer. It looks as if there are so many forums but usually you are looking for help with a specific topic or location and you should be able to find something to fit. If not, just use the general family history queries forum – it’s “one size fits all” and will get plenty of attention there. Or just pick a forum at random and look around to get an idea of what others are asking or offering and plunge in when you’re ready. Wendy has given you a few options to start with and these will lead you on to bigger and better things. There are people all around the world just waiting to help or to listen to your stories. No pressure – enjoy

Thanks Everyone for your encouragement. I have persevered and followed all of "Waitabit" suggestions and now feel more confident. I have to laugh at myself a bit though because I see my actual join date was last October and apparently I managed to post something then! Perhaps I lost a few brain cells in between. I expect some people will agree there are so may places to look and things to belong to it can get confusing. However, this does seem like a good site to check a lot. See you all around.
Maggie
