Going around in circles.

I'm a newbie & don't understand the in's & out's of the simplest sites. Help!
Is there a simple step by step guide to getting around, starting at the beginning.
What are all these symbols of envelopes with locks on them, in different colours, some open & some closed. Even the FAQ has proved to be unfathomable.
I can't escape, please rescue me from wherever it is that I am.... i have been here for hours.

Still going around in circles, tried 'quick guide to posting' it didn't enlighten me. What green light next to the moderators name? The FAQ just took me back to what I did not understand.
