Oh please continue the competitions - even though I haven't actually entered one yet I have aspirations to do so. I love reading the entries especially as this competition had such great recollections. I spent so long thinking of a favourite memory, life intervened and I missed the closing date! But it was still great fun to be able to vote and feel a part of it that way........Lesley

Oh and great news from Thomasin.

I voted, but didn't enter the competition as I couldn't decide what my favourite memory was - there are lots of good ones. My most memorable though, was when I was 8. I came home from school and my dad sat me on his lap and told me that Grandma (who lived with us) had gone on a long holiday. I still remember thinking "Ah, she has died, but he doesn't want to upset me". I knew about death, because just a week earlier, Grandma's first son, aged 50, my mum's eldest brother had died. Grandma went into shock and died a week later at home - a hard time for my mum - I remember her crying a lot. When I searched for them on the death index, if you put a ruler across the two pages that show up, they are on the same line, which in a way is nice and I know that they are still together, even in death in more ways than one.

Please don't stop the competitions Bo, even if I don't enter them, I still enjoy reading the entries.

Sometimes, and hopefully not too often, life just gets in the way, especially for those of us still obliged to work. So not so much "apathetic" as "too busy".

I found voting difficult also,..was a toss up between three, all influenced by my own childhood probably.
I am still reviewing some of my memories from childhood, so don't need to indulge in a second one. (childhood)Toss in a trip thro' the Archives & ''tis better than a trip to the movies. Giggles & tears & renewed ideas for searching.

Way to go Thomasin! let's hope you both enjoy each others company again for a long time.
Hey, lookit' ...done without reading glasses. May have to dump them, unless I just can't see the typos!

Thank you, everybody. Here is the feedback on our meeting -

We had one whole hour of constant talk, during which the 59-60 years since we had last met just rolled away. Our conversation covered childhood memories, old neighbours, our parents, where we later went to school, what we did after we left school, our husbands, children, grandchildren, what our families had done with their lives, health/ill-health, computers - oh, and family history. She and her husband have been researching their respective families and not getting on very well - so naturally I recommended B-G!

Apparently the secret society in my air-raid shelter consisted of several children and some wooden boxes (I imagine for seats and a table).

All in all, it was great fun - and when they come back from a family holiday we intend to do it all again!

So glad that you had a lovely day - you prompted me to look for 'Carol's' family. I have discovered Granny died aged just 56 (younger than I am now - and even now I think of her as an 'old' lady). Her husband had died at only 48. It appears that Carol's mum had married in the year she was born and was just 17. The birth was registered in Yorkshire even though the marriage, and Granny, lived in Middlesex. Sadly I could not definitely find any other details Carol's surname is quite common, and I have no idea where she went after Granny died, although there is a possible second marriage for Carol's mum and it is to a name that I vaguely remember. Perhaps one day we will cross paths - I wonder if she has similar memories?

As granny has passed away you could always post on a "looking for" site or any genealogy sites you belong to!

    Good luck!

    Thomasin...

Glad you had such a delightful visit!

Have you tried Friends R******d? Even though you don't know where she went to live, you might find that Carol went to a school in your area with a name that you recognise. I do wish you luck in your search, and thanks again for prompting me to start on mine!
