Yes, I am truly amazed at the poor response to the recent competition. I don't know what happened in the past, but this competition yielded very few entries - all were delightful to read and were read by a number of people.

However, the poll to decide the winner has been seen by over 1000 forum members to date yet only 21 have taken the trouble to vote. Is this typical ? In the past we have had no idea of the number of entries, the poll has shown this up and, yes, I am amazed at the general apathy.

    I agree with you Eileen.

It was so easy to vote as well.

Perhaps they didn't have time to read them all.

That would be a shame Bo. I missed this competition as I just couldn't decide which memory was my favourite and totally overlooked the voting - apologies. Will do so now

Well, I am absolutely delighted that Bo Peep set that competition. Pennydog's recollections of the friend who moved away reminded me of how my one-time 'best friend' suddenly disappeared with her family. This was nearly 60 years ago, and I always wondered where she had gone to.

The other day it occurred to me that I could maybe track her down using the internet. Luckily she had an unusual first name, and I knew that we were about the same age. I found her birth record, and we were both born in the same quarter of the same year. Next I looked for a marriage, and found that she fortunately married someone with an uncommon surname - locally! Next I found two children, also born locally.

The next step - more expensive! - was to look on one of those sites where you can find out people's addresses. Sure enough, there they were, about three miles away. I wrote her a letter and posted it yesterday. A few minutes ago I had a phone call. Yes, it was indeed the right person, and we are going to meet up tomorrow afternoon to catch up on the years in between!

For those who read my competition entry, she remembered (without prompting) the secret societies and the moss-gathering! She also remembered that we used to hold a secret society in my parents' air-raid shelter, something I had forgotten. Oh, we've got a lot to talk about ..................................

So thank you, thank you Bo Peep, firstly for encouraging us to cast our minds back to far-off days, which was very enjoyable, and secondly for inadvertently helping me to rediscover an old friend. It has made my day!
Sadly, our dear friend Dorothy (alias Thomasin) passed away on Sunday, 17th. February, 2013.

This was a lovely idea as it's also given us a peek into our `friends' childhood. I've really enjoyed reading the entries and it would have been great to have seen a few more.

I think it depends on whether the people who log onto the forum are just seeking information on a particular line, or whether (like me and quite a few others) people enjoy the `company' of our friends as well.

PS. Just saw you post Thomasin....how wonderful!

I thought the competition was a wonderful idea. I had a tough time recalling anything truly memorable, but reading the entries gave me fleeting relapses to times gone by and a wonderful wish to go back.

I think it is wonderful that Thomasin was able to re-connect to her old friend. What a heart warming story!

Keep up the competitions Bo, they are fun to do and reading the responses just adds pleasure.
Sadly, our friend Vanessa, passed away 29th. February 2012.

It was great to try to think of some of our most memorable times.. I had a hard time picking what I wanted to write about. I figured two or three entries would be a little greedy
Please keep up the competitions as some make you think and some are fun and some are both. Those of us who were born and live "elsewhere" may not enter all the ones with questions on England, but its fun to be involved when we have general categories to take part in.

    Sue

PS... I have yet to vote because I can't make up my mind! I certainly hope alot of people are still trying to decide..............................

PPS... I hope pennydog follows Thomasin's lead and searches her friend with our modern methods...
