Doesn't ring any bells with me! Mudcat is the place to look for folk songs - the one that everyone knows is "I Will Take You Home Again, Kathleen", but that doesn't really fit your description:

Take me home again Kathleen, sang by Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Platters to name just a few but the words are not quite as you remember.
Josh Ritter also sang a song about Kathleen as did the Byrds but neither sound right.

lord, my memory is shocking! here is the song- 'The Tinker Nancy Miles'... someone just told me the correct name, and i have found it on you tube.. don,t know how to do the link thing for you, but if anyone is interested in hearing it , just type you tube + nancy miles into search bar- there is a beautiful version by Robin Turner & Peter Sherbourne. its a lovely song. does anyone have any other suggestions for lovely old songs which we don't hear anymore? i'd love to hear them.

There are details of lots of beautiful old Romany songs to be found via the website of the English Folk Dance & Song Society. I'd better not post a link, as they have a shop at their London HQ that sells, amongst other things, cds.
If you Google EFDSS and use the search function for "Romany" on their website, you should find plenty to keep you busy!
Edit to say that I've just checked and the EFDSS website's own search function is pretty hopeless. Better to simply Google "EFDSS Romany", which will give you plenty of results.
