In 1839 Henry Thwaites gave his abode as " Hamsell, in the Parish of Rotherfield and Withyam, Sussex".
He owned several properties and his Town House was in London, but he and his wife Jane were both buried at Rotherfield, St Denys.
I have 'googled', looked in Phillimore's Atlas & Index of Parish Registers, and looked at countless maps & Parloc, but cannot find Hamsell, can anyone assist me please?

I believe that it may have been the name of his home. A search on Google books found a Gentleman's Magazine death notice stating that he had died at Hamsell House, Rotherfield on Jan 13 at the age of 87. The page title indicates that it was in 1840.

There was a Hamsell Farm northwest of Rotherfield according to the 1881 census, with a Thomas Pratt in residence.
It is mentioned on the Weald website: theweald.org/c.asp?MemoId=C4R003 (put http:// in front).
Any use?

Hello Marianne
I’ve found a digitized book about Rotherfield here: theweald.org/bk.asp?bookid=Pullein000 (put http:// in front – no www) and at the bottom of page 16 there’s a reference to Hamsell: theweald.org/bk.asp?bookid=Pullein016&xid=H&xnm=1
Which leads to this: theweald.org/P3.asp?PId=Er.Hamsll and at the very bottom of this page there’s a map image from c1899. Click on it and all will be revealed!
