    Hello padua,

To attract more attention from forum members, I have moved your post to a thread of its own, rather than leaving it as a reply on another thread.

Before going any further I thought it best to clarify the spelling of Samuel's last name. Both his birth and marriage registrations show him as Samuel Marrall

    Birth
Marrall, Samuel Mar qtr 1855 vol. 7b page 27

    Marriage
Marrall, Samuel Sep qtr 1898 Sheffield 9c page 812
    Emma Thornton on same page

In creating the new thread for padua, I provided the title. I'll change the spelling of his name on the thread title to the documented spelling.

By the time of the 1911 census Emma is widowed. She was living at 3 Court, 3 Bramall Lane, Sheffield.

She was a bir difficult to find as she has written Mrs Marrall on census form which was then just transcribed Marrall. However, her 4 eldest sons all bore the name Thornton so I'm pretty certain it's her.

    Marrall widow 46 b. Sheffield
Thorntone (sic) Walter, son 22 spoon and fork engraver b' Sheffield
Thorntone Harry 19, Table knife cutler b. Beeston, Notts

Thorntone, Harold, 14 Engineer Tool Maker b. Beeston
Marrall, Evelyn daughter,22, butcher knife cutler
    Marrall, Samuel 11
    Marrall, Herbert, 10
    Marrall, Emily 6

It looks like Emma was married before and looking at Evelyn's age maybe Samuel was too

I can't find a previous marriage for Samuel. I looked for him in 1891 to see if I could find him with daughter Evelyn and I found this rather curious census

    RG11/3802/135/page 6

It shows William Marrall, 36 b.1855, occ. Watchman, described as married living in Eccleshall Bierlow Sheffield. There is no wife on the page, instead a woman described as mother-in-law is living with him along with a 37 year old widow named Clara T Spencer and 4 Spencer children.
Samuel is enumerated as born Sheffield but there was no other birth registered around 1855 for that name. It depends really on who provided the information but I'm sure it's him.
The other curiosity is the youngest Spencer child, Evelyn who was born 1889 in Sheffield the same as Evelyn Marrell in the 1911 census.

Could someone else offer their opinion please

I've looked on the 1881 census and found Clara Fanny Spencer, age 27, a married boarder, living in Sheffield, along with her son Samuel , 18 months old. (RG11 / Piece 4642 / Folio 71 / Page 18) census Crown copyright in care of TNA These two persons match the 1891 census, but then there should also be a daughter Amelia Spencer, who is listed on the 1891 as age 13.

In the preceding household is a 39 year old Edward Ibbotson with his family. This matches the surname of Samuel Marrall's mother in law on the 1891 census (84 year old widowed Charlotte Ibbotson).

I wonder if Charlotte Ibbotson is Samuel Marrall's step-mother?

Well, it's not getting any clearer. 4 year old Amelia Spencer is found on the 1881 census at (RG11 / Piece 4642 / Folio 39 / Page 31), a niece to Thomas Smith & wife Emma. Also in the household is Mary Ibbotson, 68 year old widowed mother-in-law.
