    Smile Rogers-Northleach

    Hi,
I am looking for the birth of JOSEPH ROGERS born abt 1843-45 in Northleach, his father was reported to be a John Rogers.
Any help in finding Josephs birth would be gratefully received. He has been the 'brickwall' in my family tree for the past three years.
    Many thanks
Marge (Great Grandaughter of Joseph Rogers)

Many thanks for prompt reply. I only have to go on, the censuses, from 1871-1911 of which he states each time that he was born in Northleach, also his Marriage certificate (he married in Sussex) which states his father as John Rogers-deceased-Stableman. Thank you and I will keep your answer on my records.

Marge, 1851 census has a Joseph Rogers age 6 yrs with Parents John 37 & Mary 30 at Floore in Northamptonshire, 60+ miles away from Northleach, but a child may not remember early yrs & places.
There are 3 other children, Loe(sic) 9..Simon 7.. & Mary Jane 4. Very faded page on Ancestry so difficult to read at this end of the day.

A marriage for a John Natt Rogers is on FreeBMD 1840 same page has a Mary Poole

    Hi,
On his marriage certificate his occupation states 'Domestic Groom' His wifes maiden name was Elizabeth Price, she was born in Hampstead and her apprenticeship as a dressmaker was in Brighton ,Sussex, were they met (I presume)and married.
On all censuses after 1871 through to 1911 (all in London)he states his occupation as Groom or Carman.
His childrens names were, Joseph John, Emily Elizabeth,Charles Thomas, Maud Adelaide, Lucy Mary, William George and Henry James. Quite a variation on names!
Many thanks if you can help.

Many thanks- this one I need to investigate further, the only question mark I would have, is the childrens names don't link up to any name used by my Joseph or his children, I will have a look into this today. Thank you so much for your help.

    Hi,
Thank you for your help. One of my stray certificates sent for a few years ago, was for the marriage of John Rogers to Jane Reames at Hazleton. I remember following this on the censuses and he was'nt mine, Its so weird, on all censuses from 1871 he states clearly he was born in Northleach and yet, to date I can find no sign of him. Again thank you so much for your help.

    Three things:

    1) Something I've encountered a few times: A couple may have moved away from the place they grew up, but the wife went back to her mother for the birth of her own children, particularly the first. So, your Joseph might well have been both baptised and registered in the 'new' place but he may always have known, and so always stated, that he was actually BORN at his grandparents' house , i.e. Northleach, even though he never lived there. Just a thought.

    2) Looking at FREEBMD I can see that there definitely ARE Rogers families in Northleach. I can only suggest that you build up a detailed picture of them from all the records you can (parish registers, censues, wills etc). This MIGHT help you find a suitable John who isn't otherwise accounted for over the years. In doing so you MIGHT come across some clues as to where else to go looking for him. Not much help, but it's all I can think of, given that Joseph is so consistent in his reference to Northleach.

    3) Are there any non-conformist registers for Northleach, and if so, have you checked them? The family may be there in Northleach, just not in the CoE parish registers ... Though, given the difficulty finding the birth registration as well, I suspect scenario (1) above ....

    HTH
