    Hello Carol,

I have moved your query over to your thread about George and Ann so as to keep all the information in one place.

To answer your question about the witnesses, yes it would provide those. Have a look at this Brit-Gen Resource page to see what would have been included. It would not have given George's birth date, nor where he was born, although it may state where he was living and might give his age.

In post #8 above you have said,
I have found on the Winterbourne family history site the marriage of George and Anne but only 2 witnesses given so his parent may have died by then.
Have you the names of the witnesses already?

Most marriages I have seen in parish registers have brothers and sisters or church officials (Parish Clerk) as witnesses. It seems rare to have parents (and it doesn't give relationships either), so don't assume because they were not witnesses that they have died. There were (usually) only be two witnesses anyway.

PLEASE don't SHOUT. Capital letters are viewed as shouting and can be very hard to read!
This thread seems to duplicate others.

I have come into this rather late but am interested in that you state "George Wigmore PLAYER was married to Mary ANGEL. I think there could be a connection though to George Wigmore PLAYER as his wifes middle name of Angel is also one of my direct males called Benjamin Angel PLAYER".
In my own family I have a Benjamin ANGEL who married a Martha WIGMORE 12 April 1784 at Frampton Cotterell. Is it possible that there might be a connection between our families?

    Hello from South Africa

    Hello Pat

Many tks for your reply on my George Player. I just typed out loads on Benjamin Angels etc but the computer went down and I lost it all and I have to go to my daughters to house sit so now in a rush. I wont be back till Wed late when hopefully the signals are back to normal. I am sure there is a connection. The first Benjamin I have is Benjamin Angel Player born 1836 and married to Ann Wallis the they had a son Benjamin Player born 1876. I first started reseaching the Benjamin Angel after I saw a George Wigmore Player etc and BAFHS sent loads of email on Martha, Benjamin etc etc so If you can give me what info you have I can send the bits you dont have as there are lots. I didnt have time previously to sus it all!! out as I got diverted to more of my side. I have gone back to 1645 on my side assuming that my George Player born abt 1804 is the George I think he is!!! My George was married to Ann and George Wigmore Player was married to someone else (will give all details when I get back) but must be connection somewhere with the name Benjamin Angel. In haste for now Carol (in Bonza Bay, East London, Eastern Cape, S.A. We emmigrated in 1982 from U.K. but hopeing to come over in 2011 again to visit Winterbourne etc etc etc!! Reply more later

    Default Free Research

Hi Carol, have you tried finding out if there's an LDS Family History centre near you? Click here to search for your nearest one. You could ring them and ask how much it would cost to order films of some of the records you want to see.

Also, as you say you are new to all this, here are some useful free sites you could use. You have probably used many of them, but in case not:

FreeBMD - GRO index, ie all English/Welsh birth, marriage and death certificates after 1838.
The National Archives - all sorts of records, eg. legal, military etc.
FreeReg - lots of UK parish records
FamilySearch Beta - lots of parish and non-conformist records, worldwide
    1881 Census - at FamilySearch

Gloucestershire Family History Society (please google for it) has a free BMD search. It is the same GRO index as the freeBMD site above, but if freeBMD hasn't finished transcribing Gloucestershire this might be better. They also have some paid services.

Gloucestershire Archives - a searchable database of several resources. Some are just an index, some are non-conformist records that give parents' details. No George Player, but there are other Players - I'd recommend putting in just the surname, then try some spelling variations.

Genuki also tells you where you can find resources for Gloucestershire, some paid, some free.

By the way, you asked if someone could look up a marriage certificate for the 1820s, certificates in England start in 1837 and the only way to get them at the minute is to pay £9, as far as I know there's no free look-up. For the 1820s, it would have to be parish records which probably wouldn't be available online, only from libraries, or family history centres like the LDS one I mentioned.

Hope this helps, I've probably duplicated some things you already know, but thought it wouldn't hurt!
