Two brothers believed killed in Boer War

Some fifty years ago a relative mentioned that two of her brothers were killed in the Boer War. I would like to check on the details of this (eg Where did they die and where would their graves be?) They had lived in the St Pancras area of London (according to the 1891 census.) From memory they did not serve in a Middlesex regiment. I believe it was one from the Midlands or North of England ( possibly Staffordshire?). Their names were John Gardner and Thomas Gardner. John was born in the St Pancras area of London and was 16 at the time of the 1891 census. His brother was 14 at the time of the census.
Can anyone help with finding the Boer War related details please?

I would suggest that the first step is to confirm the family story by obtaining their death certificates. As a first step to this end you can search the GRO Army Death indexes which are available at findmypast* and other places. You can then order death certificates in the usual way.

Once you have that information, there are further steps you can take to get detailed information.

The names are quite common and there are several possibles for their deaths.
Is this the family in the 1891 census?
William 1849, Catherine 1851, William 1873, John 1875, Thomas 1877 and Tassie 1881?
They lived in Stanhope Street.
John was a Bamboo Worker and Thomas a Grocers Shop Boy.

A rather rushed look at the index suggested that 2 Gardners including a Thomas served in the 5th Royal Watwickshire regiment and that many of the regiment were killed in action or went missing.
If one or both brothers died in South Africa is there any way I can get hold of death certificates without knowledge of date and location of death?
