As some of you know, I've recently started my family tree. I was so pleased to find a "well-known" artistic craftman that was in my family, albeit, pretty distant.
George Lailey, who was my Great Great Great Grand-Father's Nephew (any ideas on what that makes him to me are welcome), was known at the last of the bowl turners to be working within the UK.
George and his forbears turned bowls using a pole lathe. It seems that they specialised in making nested bowls all from the same piece of wood. The Lailey's seemed to multiply very well and all in and around West Berkshire. There is lots and lots on this rare craft online:

George William Lailey (senior) 1847 - 1912 I think was my great great Uncle, his nephew Arthur Mathews lived in Basingstoke and died in 2005. George William Lailey (junior) did not have any children. My father Raye Wesley Mathews 1905 - 1987? died in Perth Scotland may had a younger brother Arthur Mathews who died Basingstoke 2005 and was an engineer. I think my grand mother was Emma Lailey and married my grand father Albert Mathews. I was born Alan john Mathews in 1939 and am called Peter.
