Hi, I'm another Smith trying to trace a Smith family in Cardiff, Wales. My father Walter James was a sailor in WWII and landed in South Africa for r and r after being wounded. He got married there and lost touch with his family over the years. Have been trying to trace his family on and off for years.
Would love to know how to proceed from here.
Thanks from another Smith in Brisbane, Australia

I wonder if you could name your Fathers Parents or his birth date, it would help to sort out the Walters born in Cardiff at any given time. i.e.
one such is:
Births Mar 1922
Smith Walter J x Mears (Mother) at Cardiff 11a 883
There are others which may not include his second initial.Happy Families

Hi and many thanks for your reply and for the warm welcome from all.
This is amazing! His mother's name is Ada Mears and father is Alfred George. He was born in Ruppera Street, Cardiff or Newport? 6th March, 1922. Father's occupation, brewer's labourer. How did you get the info to pass on to me??? And please, how do I go from here? Most excited and can't wait to explore further.

Hello Pete,Ted Washbrook in Australia here, I have traced the maternal line of my lineage to Norhamptonshire.
In 1853, my gg/granparents John Smith amd Sarah Anne Hodges were married at Rathnerthorp. In 1855, they with one child George sailed to Australia on the ship Constitution, when they arrived in Sydney the ship and all aboard were put into quarantine as one of he recent deaths on board was put down to smallpox, the survivors settled in New South Wales, mainly in the Snowy Mountain area where they established farms. All Smiths can't be bad.
