    Default Cordelia

Joseph Phillips born 1833 was married to Cordelia born 1838 in Callington, Cornwall. I can find no mention of their marriage so cannot find her pre marriage surname, and therefore cannot trace her birth in Callington. How do I go about finding this please? They are mentioned on the 1901 Census and had a daughter Selina born 1884. Selina went to Australia 1912 and her family there are now trying to trace further back in her family line. I live in Cornwall and want to help. Margreen.

Free BMD has Joseph Phillips and Cordelia Maria Seymour on same page
    Dec 1870 Liskeard 5c 106
If you get Birth cert for Selina and her mother's maiden name is Seymour this could be the marriage

there is a Selina Phillips registered Jun 1881 St Austell ref 5c 165

    and from Callington Heritage site:
St. Mellion Baptisms Cordelia Maria SEYMOUR 01-Jan 1845 "Thomas & Maria of Thrustles Nest, Miner" a bit later than the date you quoted so Selina's birth has to be the place to start.

In 1871 Cordelia M Phillips & Co. were at North Street, Tywardreath. She was 26 born Callington. There does not appear to a GRO registration for a Cordelia Seymour prior to 1848, when a Cordila Seymour was registered in St Germans, which covers Callington. All adds to the confusion ;-)

Forget that first birth reference - there must have been another Selina b 1881 the one you want is:
Selina Jane H Phillips Reg Mar 1884 Bodmin 5c,69

The St Mellion one is the one we are looking at Peter - the above 1891 census and her baptism have her as Cordelia Maria

It looks like Cordelia had a brother William and her mother died in 1853:

Callington Baptisms William SEYMOUR 19-Aug 1851 "Callington, Thomas & Maria, "
    Callington Burial William SEYMOUR 03-Feb 1852 6 ", "
Callington Burial Maria Truman SEYMOUR 03-Apr 1853 34
    (from Calington Heritage site)

given that in 1891 Joseph is 49, his birth date (1841-2) also seems to be later than originally quoted.
The most likely baptism (from Cornwall opc site) is:
5 Sep 1841 at Lostwithiel to Joseph and Mary of Rose-Hill.
There is a marriage at nearby Lanlivery 2 Mar 1841 of Joseph Phillips to Mary Jewell. his father is Peter , her father Thomas
Joseph son of Peter and Ann was bapt 12 Sept 1813
And a burial 21 Nov 1893 at Lostwithiel of Joseph age 80 of Bodmin Hill, .
